Just how selective: Understanding selective admissions in the UK and USA

Hear from representatives from the University of Oxford, Brown University and the Singapore American School discuss and share insightful information about selective admissions processes in both USA and the UK. Panelists highlight the characteristics of successful applicants and share an overview "behind the numbers" to illustrate how few places are available for international students. This will be helpful in understanding the realities for our students through the application process.

Trinity College, Cambridge Essay Competitions

Trinity College, Cambridge is once again running a series of essay competitions in Philosophy, History, English Literature, Linguistics and Politics. Designed to encourage super-curricular exploration, these competitions are open to students in Year 12/Grade 11 and above.

Our students who are keen on demonstrating their remarkable aptitude and intellectual depth are well advised to submit their written work to this competition. It is a fantastic way to receive accolades for your academic skills

Navigating your future at the University of Toronto

You and your family are invited to come to Convocation Hall at the U of T St. George campus on Saturday, May 25th (10 am-2:45 pm) for the Navigating your Future event. It’s never too early to start thinking about your next steps. With so many options available to you, starting to plan your future can be difficult.

With sessions such as “The Art of Double Majoring” or “Commuting vs. Living in Residence,” this event is designed specifically to help you form a better picture of what the university has to offer even before you start applying.

Interested in US colleges? Not a star at standardized testing?

One of the major stresses for students who are considering US colleges is their concern that they might not perform well on the standardized tests required for admission to many American schools. An increasing number of colleges, however, are questioning the value of such tests as predictors of future performance. As a result, they may exempt students who have a certain Grade Point Average or they may use SAT/ACT scores only for academic counselling purposes. Some universities (e.g. NYU and the University of Chicago) will accept predicted IB results in place of ACT or SAT scores.

Strategies for beginning your post-secondary search

Think of it as a big research project.

As with any research project, start early, break the process up into smaller steps, pay careful attention to details, and ask for help when you need it. The research you do now and the work you complete with your counsellor will take you to a university and program that are a best match for you

The best place to start is with yourself. An honest and detailed assessment of your strengths and weaknesses, interests and talents, values and goals is essential. You are not expected to have all the answers at this stage of your life (or indeed at any other!), but this is a time period where it is essential to begin to understand yourself in a more adult way. You may not know exactly which career to pursue, but you should be able to answer questions about how you learn best, how adventurous you are, what bores or excites you. Such answers will help you to decide whether you would fit best at a big, medium, or small school, how far away from home you are willing to look, what kinds of courses you might enroll in, which extracurricular programs are of most interest.

Once you have a clearer sense of your needs and goals, you are ready to begin researching programs and institutions that might be a good fit. There are a number of print resources available that can provide a quick overview of a wide range of institutions.

Once you have identified some potential schools, of course, you will want to explore the individual websites of those institutions with your counsellor. Your research process will continue in the fall with the Ontario Universities Fair in late September and of course, the visits by many university representatives to The York School. All these events will be publicized in Beyond York.

Remember that as with any big research project, the keys to success are to start early, break the process up into smaller steps, pay careful attention to deadlines, and ask for help when you need it. If you do careful research, you will be much more likely to choose a university and program that are a good match.

University of Cambridge information session

On Thursday, May 30 (7-8:30 p.m.), Dr. Caroline Burt, Admissions Tutor at Pembroke College, will be giving a detailed presentation for interested students and parents on the admissions process, costs, and nature of academic life at the University of Cambridge in the UCC Student Centre. Aspiring Journalists Take Note - Boston University Summer Journalism Institute

Each two-week session at the Institute provides an equal mix of inspiration and instruction from working reporters, presented in three daily blocks:

Classroom: A review of journalism fundamentals with reading and writing assignments following the university's college text.

Newsroom: A hands-on environment led by a professional reporter where student teams cover real news events in the city.

Special: An opportunity to tour local newsrooms, hear lectures on media law and the Freedom of Information Act, learn from investigative reporters, and visit nearby colleges.

Plus, students experience a taste of college life and explore a first-class city, with visits to Boston's historical and cultural landmarks.

Times Higher Education: World Ranking

The Times Higher Education is a world renowned publication of global universities performance. Their most recent University Impact Rankings show, for the first time, how the global higher education sector is working towards 11 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which include academic freedom policies, efforts towards gender equality and taking action against climate change.  

The results reveal a brand new line-up of institutions that are making a real impact on society outside their research and teaching.

Topping the overall table is the University of Auckland followed closely by two Canadian institutions – McMaster University in second and the University of British Columbia and Manchester University in joint third.

Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Australia achieve the top average overall scores.


Calculus Challenge Exam:

Hosted by UBC and SFU. The Calculus Challenge Exam is a 3-hour test for high school students who have taken high school calculus. A student who passes the Challenge Exam is entitled to claim credit for the first term of calculus at any of the six participating institutions: SFU, TWU, UBC, UFV, UNBC, and UVic.

The option is low-risk and inexpensive (registration is $100). The exam may be written at UBC, or at a sitting organized at your high school. More information is available online at

The Challenge Exam is valuable for students *even if they intend not to claim credit for it*. The transition from high school to university is as much about culture as content, and the opportunity provided by the Challenge Exam, to write a university-level test while supported by a high school environment, is valuable.

Western Ivey AEO Status

AEO is a conditional pre-admission status to the HBA Program that students can apply for during the final year of high school.

The timing of a student’s offer is not necessarily related to the quality of the application, but rather on the availability of required grades and confirmation of other application details. It is important to note that they do not make offers on Grade 11 marks. Students’ mid-year Grade 12 marks (or the equivalent for their school system) may be necessary for them to make them an offer. Ivey anticipates receiving this information mid-May. In light of this, applications will continue to be under consideration until mid-May.

First Round

First rounds of offers are made on strong first term grades and later offers are based on mid-year grades from second term. Please keep in mind that they make admission decisions on both students’ grades and extracurricular activities, thus, 90% is not a strict cut-off.

Western Offer

Ivey is unable to make an AEO offer unless a student has been admitted to a faculty at Western or one of its affiliated university colleges (Brescia University College, Huron University College, King's University College).

McGill to overhaul its mental health service model

With increasing numbers of Canadian university students reporting an urgent need for help with mental health issues, postsecondary institutions across the country are rapidly expanding and revitalizing their approaches to service delivery for students experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, depression and other serious mental-health issues. A key goal will be to focus on prevention. McGill’s  Rossy Student Wellness Hub will include embedded wellness advisors, an online service portal and an upgraded bricks-and-mortar location.

No prior experience or application is required. London programmes are held at University College London (UCL) and students will stay in UCL accommodation. New York programmes are held at New York University (NYU).

Individual offers are made by UK universities on a rolling basis and are communicated (along with the specific conditions required) on the tracking section of the UCAS website. You do not have to make any choices until you have had a decision from all the UK schools to which you have applied.

Once all the decisions have been communicated to you, however, a choice must be made. You may hold only two offers: one will be your firm choice, the other your insurance choice. In most cases, the offers will be based on an expectation that you will achieve a certain point total. If your offers are conditional on IB results, it is important that you accept an offer of admission from a Canadian university in order to ensure that you have a place next year in case of an unexpected drop on your May exams.

In many cases, UK universities will also make an offer of admission based on your OSSD results.

If you have not met the requirements for a place, it is essential that you check with the individual university after you receive your IB results in July in order to verify your status. In many cases, you might not have your offer confirmed until the A level results are released in mid-August. Your counsellor will be happy to help you through this process, if necessary.


We know that many of you have been hearing back from universities with information about your admission status or scholarship offers. Don’t panic if you haven’t heard from all your choices. Schools vary considerably in the scheduling of their offers!

Pre University Summer School for summer 2019.

The programme will run from 13th July – 27th July 2019 at the cost of £2,600 per student and this includes on campus accommodation, half board catering, transfer and both the academic and social programme.

This Pre University Summer School is aimed at four key objectives

1.       Provide an insight into careers in the fields of study that students are interested in, both in the UK and internationally.
2.       Explore different areas of study concerned with the interests of the students
3.       Learn about the foundations underpinning their fields of study and the challenges in each area
4.       Preparation for life as a student at highly rated Russell Group University or elsewhere

The sessions are taught using a variety of seminars, lectures, workshops, presentations and group based study to give students a taste of the requirements of studies in the three different areas.

Business, Management & Economics

The Pre University Summer School in Business, Management & Economics looks to introduce students to the subject areas that may form part of their studies in the different degrees. This includes but is not restricted to topics such as micro and macroeconomics, the relationship between society, Business and the consumer, and how markets behave. There is also a look into the fundamental principles of organisation management and Human Resource Management. This gives students an insight into what they could be learning and help them begin to realise or continue to develop areas where their particular interests may lie.

As part of the Pre University Summer School, we aim to show students a glimpse of their potential futures after their studies, which may include going out into the professional world or continuing with Higher Education into postgraduate studies. We look to introduce the students to a variety of professionals from Human Resource Directors, Chief Executive Officers, Entrepreneurs and lecturers amongst others so they can really learn what shape their future could take professionally.

Medicine & Healthcare

Our pathway in Medicine & Health introduces students to the variety of studies and careers that lead to a life in the provision of healthcare, from doctors to scientists and mental health professionals.

Our programme looks at sessions ranging from practical clinical skills and dissections, to the history and foundation of modern day healthcare systems around the world. We aim to show students what topics they may cover in their studies and prepare them for the level of the courses they would face at a top UK university. This includes a field trip to a university hospital, visits from professionals and sessions on healthcare from a patient’s perspective and discussions with current patients. This is topped up with a study fair where the students have the opportunity to speak to lecturers and current students from a variety of programmes working towards becoming healthcare professionals.

Another aim is to show students the potential professions and the challenges and benefits it may bring. This is achieved through sessions with professionals and a careers fair with the opportunity to chat with several different professionals including GPs, Mental Health Specialist, Surgeons, Lecturers, Medical Scientists and Radiographers amongst other professions.


The Pre University Summer School in Law aims to introduce students to some of the subject areas that they would be studying with a Law degree and to experience the level of studying required at University. This includes but is not restricted to fields within Criminal Law, Consumer Rights, Artificial Intelligence, Law of War, and the foundations of legal systems around the world.

The subjects are presented via a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops with faculty from our Law school, external experts and current students to ensure they gain a variety of perspectives regarding the study of Law at a top UK university.

Another key aim of the programme is to give students the opportunity to glimpse their potential futures through field trips to witness cases in a court and meet professionals in the field. This could include barristers, solicitors, judges and lecturers in law and talk to them about how they progressed to their current position and the benefits and challenges they have encountered.


The University of Szeged, a leading university in Hungary, has been offering an English-language medical program for three decades. The Faculties of Dentistry and Pharmacy offer similar programs. Almost 1400 students from over 30 countries study in a multicultural, affordable setting. Graduates are entitled to apply for hospital residencies worldwide and can participate in the US Medical Licensing Examination. EU citizens receive an automatic license within the European Community. In recognition of the superior preparation provided by the International Baccalaureate curriculum, the university offers direct admission to the medical, dental or pharmacy programs for those diploma candidates who achieve a grade of 5 or higher in two of biology, chemistry, physics, or math and English. Such IB applicants are not required to sit for an entrance examination.  For more information, click here.

Students who have applied to UBC may note that their application account mentions the need for an “interim official IB Anticipated Grades Form.” Please be reassured that the IB Schools of Ontario interim transcript that The York School sends to UBC for all our students is considered acceptable for this form. There is no need for concern.


It is important for students and parents to remember that the vast majority of scholarships at Canadian universities are based on grades and do not require a separate application. The competition for those few scholarships that consider both grades and extracurricular activities is extremely intense, requiring top marks and outstanding leadership in non-academic commitments. Such applications require a considerable investment of time, as they must be completed carefully if they are to impress a scholarship committee. Rushed applications are never successful!

Remember that if the scholarship requires a letter of reference, you must first speak with the teacher, adviser, or coach. Please try to give referees at least a month’s notice whenever possible. A good letter of reference takes time to write! It is courteous to write your referee a note of thanks.
