Grade 1 - November 24 / 2017

Highlights

This week we began looking at the concept of time in math. We tackled some big questions:

  • Why is time important?
  • Why, and how, do we measure time?
  • What is the purpose of time?

In our guided reading groups, we reviewed how to retell the sequence of events and main idea of a text. We also used our Word Study books to search for, and record, new word patterns. The students wrote a letter to author Barbara Reid, which we will use as a pre-assessment of their understanding.

This has been a busy week in Art! At the beginning of the week, students used clay to create winter/holiday decorations. Also this week, the Grade 1s painted winter scenes using their knowledge of horizon line, as well as foreground and background. They also learned about negative space.

In French, the students have started a new set of centres. Among other things, the students have been reading the play, La petite poule rouge, with the teacher. The students were also working on les phrases folles (silly sentences), writing in their French journal and making paper puppets in order to practise the play.

Looking ahead

Soon we will be launching our new unit of inquiry. As part of that unit we investigate, and then build, miniature habitats. We are looking for materials to help with the construction of these habitats. If you are able to send in any of the following, we would be most appreciative:

  • Artificial/Spanish moss (used for dried flower arrangements)
  • cotton balls
  • tissue paper in a variety of colours
  • miniature artificial plants and trees (dollhouse size)
  • artificial snow
  • small twigs
  • plasticine (colours required are: brown, light blue, black, red, white, grey, light green)
  • cardboard cut in small squares
