Grade 1 - October 26 / 2018

We are looking at ways to group numbers together for the purpose of ordering and comparing numbers. We are using connecting cubes, ten frames, base ten materials, number lines, hundreds charts and various contexts (e.g., real-life experiences, number stories).

As Halloween approaches, we have been using the opportunity to learn about adjectives that can help us to describe things in detail and convey clear meaning. As well we have started to examine story elements such as plot, setting and problems and solutions in stories. This is a great opportunity when you are reading at home to incorporate this into your family discussions.

Unit of Inquiry

This week both classes are taking two different viewpoints around our Unit. 1A is starting by looking at each province and getting a better understanding of what makes it special. 1B is looking at Canadian poetry focussing on Dennis Lee. We will switch these investigations next week. Our media literacy work will also tie in to this unit by creating Canadian posters as a way of showing information and sequencing pictures to show our understanding of poetry.

In French, the students started to read our play, La poule Maboule, in small groups with the teacher while the rest of the class coloured in the play. The students have also been singing, C’est l’Halloween! Listen along here: C'est l'Halloween!

This week in Art, the Grade 1’s learned about printmaking. Each student created a foam printing plate that was printed 4 times to create a beautiful mandala.

In Music, the Grade 1s played a new rhythm game. They also played melodic patterns on the xylophones that accompanies our Hallowe’en song, I’m Not Scared.

Physical Education

In PHE, the students are working on their first invasion games unit. They have been playing games and activities that require a team to advance an object into the other teams zone in order to score.
