This week in Literacy, we began exchanging letters between classes! Next week, we look forward to identifying non-fiction text features and looking for keywords in texts. We will continue letter writing, but will simultaneously be learning early research skills as we dive into our Habitats unit of inquiry. This week, after learning a little bit about various habitats, the children chose the habitat that they were most interested in researching in further detail. Please ask your child which habitat they chose!
In Math, we have assessed knowledge, problem solving, communication and application skills in data management. This has been a fun and engaging unit! At home, you can extend this learning by graphing the number of days of snowfall during the break, number of days at home vs away, etc.
In French, the students started a new language manipulation activity called Choisis le bon mot. In this activity, there are French sentences pertaining to our play, La poule Maboule, with a missing word. There are two words to pick from and the students need to circle the correct one and copy the missing word. This activity is a good way to verify the students’ comprehension of the play through their reading and writing skills.
This week in Art, the Grade 1s all finished their animal habitat art piece. The students also created a winter painting using tape to create negative space that then became birch trees.
In Music, the Grade 1s are ready and excited to perform “Happy Holiday” at the Assembly on Friday December 14th. They are also learning a dance to a Hanukkah song in class. The Grade 1s have memorized all of their songs and dances for the Harmony Concert next Friday December 21st. We would like students to wear their long-sleeved green sweater with the white shirt for the concert on December 21st. If you don’t have a sweater, the green cardigan or the long-sleeved green polo shirt will also work..
Are you ready for a week of Spirit?! For our last week of the term, we are going to show our house team spirit with some special fun spirit days. See the chart below for what each day will be representing!
Reminder for outdoor recess during the winter weather...
Students in Grades 1 - 3 are expected to have and wear a coat, snow pants, hats, mittens and boots to keep them both warm and dry from the time of the first snowfall or as of December 1, whichever comes first, for all outdoor recess play times.
Students in Grades 4 and 5 are expected to have and wear the winter gear they feel they need to keep them both warm and dry during outdoor recess play times. Students in Grades 4 and 5 will not be permitted to stay inside for recess if they have forgotten or chosen not to bring their gear to school. They will also not be permitted to go back inside the school to get their gear if they have chosen to leave it inside their cubby.
