Grade 1 - September 7 / 2018

Dear Junior School Families,

A very warm welcome back to school. We’ve had a great week of learning together, seeing old friends, making new friends and getting into our classroom and school routines. The energy level in the Junior School was outstanding this past week and, along with the hot weather, made for lots of fun!

We were thrilled to hear how many of our Junior School students completed their homework over the summer - turning off their technology, getting outside to play and reading as many books as possible. We all hope this homework continues throughout the school year.

We have many new faces in our community this year - students, staff and parents and we look forward to everyone feeling a warm, positive community spirit in the coming weeks. We have a number of new teachers joining us at the Junior School as well as a few changes from the summer. We warmly welcome to The York School:

  • Ms. Yochabel DeGiorgio - JK

  • Ms. Sarah Akbari - SK Associate

  • Mr. Sean Rand - Grade 2

  • Mr. Griffin Daoust - Grades 1-5 Associate

  • Ms. Sue Grey - Learning Strategies (SK - Grade 2)

  • Ms. Katherine Cornacchia - Learning Strategies (Grade 5) and PHE (Grades 4-5)

  • Ms. Lara Ilick - French (Grades 3-5)

  • Ms. Melissa Hickey - Art (JK-SK)

We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Jackie Birch back from her maternity leave to Grade 4!

In this edition of the FLASH we have included lots of important information:

As we foster independence and introduce school routines, we ask of parents the following:

  • If you walk your child(ren) into the school or pick them up, please do so in the reception area. Grades 1-5 parents should refrain from going upstairs unless there is an exceptional circumstance as all students should proceed to/be in the playground area.

  • Allow your child(ren) to carry their own backpacks. This fosters independence and responsibility.

  • Make plans ahead of time for pick-up, drop-off and play dates. Students will not be permitted to use the school phone to make playdates.

We look forward to welcoming all parents to our Junior School Curriculum Night on Thursday Sept. 13th at 7:00pm where we will introduce our staff, share our learning goals for the year and have you meet your child(ren)’s teachers and hear about the learning in the classrooms.

In the meantime, as a reminder to our returning parents and for the benefit of our new parents regarding the leadership of the Junior School, we want you to know that we deeply value the home-school partnership and want to ensure that communication is clear, consistent and collaborative.

We (Val and Struan) share the leadership of the school together - this means that should you have a question or concern, we encourage you to address it with your child’s teacher first. If your question or concern is about curriculum, please contact Karen McCallum-Ryan, our Junior School Director of Curriculum. (kmccallum-ryan@yorkschool.com). If you have a question or concern about something else related to your child, please contact Val and/or Struan to set up a call or meeting.

We wish a you a great weekend and look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night if not before.

Sincerely,

Val & Struan

Val Turner - Junior School Vice-Principal

Struan Robertson - Deputy Head Academics and Junior School Principal

Highlights

Welcome back to another school year! The FLASH will be our primary way of communicating general news with you. This is where you will find upcoming dates (such as field trips, casual days, etc.), reminders of specialty items we might be looking for throughout the year, overview of curriculum that was covered throughout the week and special requests pertaining to Grade 1.

We had a wonderful week getting to know everyone! The first few weeks of Grade 1 are a time of great transition. We will be working on developing consistent routines, independence and personal responsibility. Please feel free to reach out to either of us if your child is experiencing any challenges during this time.

Occasionally, children spill liquid, have accidents, etc., and it would be much appreciated if you could send in an extra pair of underwear, socks, pants and shirt in a baggie (with your child’s name on it) to be kept at school.

If you didn’t get a chance to fill out the form we sent earlier this week, we would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to fill it out and send it our way!

Please click on the name of your child’s teacher below to review a copy of our individual class timetables. As you will notice, we have PE every second Friday, however, to make things simple, students may come to school EVERY FRIDAY in their PE uniform.

Timetables:

This year Ms Andrea will be teaching Grades 1-5 and Ms Melissa will be teaching JK and SK. Ms Andrea has been teaching primary art at The York School for the past three years and Ms Melissa is joining us from Havergal College.

Our focus in Art class is to create a welcoming and comfortable space for students to build their creative confidence.

We are looking for any art materials you are looking to get rid of! This could be recycled yogurt lids, paper towel rolls, or any other small items. We are also always looking for men's old dress shirts that we can use as smocks.

This year, the art room will be open at lunch for students to pursue personal projects. Students from Grades 1-3 will be able to sign up for Wednesday and Grades 4-5 will be able to sign up for Thursday. This will be presented to students next week in art class and signup sheets will be located in the art room. If there is a lot of interest, students may be put on a rotating schedule, coming in once every two weeks.

In French, this week, the students reviewed the rules in class, in particular, the pas d’anglais s’il te plait (no English please) rule whenever the ligne magique (the magic lIne) is put at the door frame. When the ligne magique is at the door, the class becomes similar to a French immersion class. The Grade 1 students did a great job being risk-takers this week.

Our first term PSE (Personal and Social Education) unit is Building a Caring Community. The students will be using the language expected and unexpected behaviours. When an expected behaviour happens other people may feel calm, happy, grateful, neutral. When an unexpected behaviour happens other people may feel frustrated, shocked, silly, sad, scared. We will be using the picture book series, “How Do Dinosaurs…” to build social awareness around behaviours in a playful and engaging way. At home, you may wish to use these books, or other stories, in the same way. If you would like picture book suggestions or to speak more about our programme, feel free to drop by my office or email me at afaba@yorkschool.com.
