Highlights

This week we have begun to assess the children using the PM benchmark system so that we can better target our literacy instruction. This usually takes about a week as it is done individually. We will being doing the same in Math. In Media Literacy, we have introduced the purpose of maps and began exploring different kinds of maps. Any opportunity to reinforce the importance of maps (perhaps using the GPS system in your car or on the subway), will help to reinforce this concept. We also kicked our first UOI (Unit of Inquiry) of the year this week. This UOI centres around how Canadian identity is expressed through the arts. This week we began developing an understanding of what makes Canada ‘Canada’.

We will also be introducing the class dojo system which allows each child to have their own Monster character. We will begin next week to use a program called Class Dojo to help introduce growth mindset and fostering the development of positive character traits. With the use of interactive videos, we will watch, observe and discuss various characteristics, like perseverance, kindness and communication skills.

This week in Art, the Grade 1s worked on a self portrait inspired by Amedeo Modigliani. Students identified the different proportions Modigliani used in his portraits including long necks, narrow faces, and small features. Students used oil pastels to create their art piece.

In Music, we learned about and played percussion instruments in our Welcome Back to School song. We also explored beat and rhythmic patterns in a song called, “Monkey See, Monkey Do”. Just a reminder, that Primary Choir will be starting up the week of September 24th. This year, choir rehearsals will be during the day from 10 - 10:45 on Thursdays.

Reminders

As mentioned at last night’s Curriculum Night, it would be much appreciated if you could send in a set of headphones (in a plastic baggie with your child’s name on it).

Looking Ahead
