Grade 1 - February 8 / 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

Today we celebrated our 100th day in Grade 1! We made crowns that had 100 stickers on it with our Learning Buddies and went on a scavenger hunt looking for 100 different numbers. You can find pictures on Seesaw of the festivities!

This week students continued working on their drafts of their habitat letter. The letters are sounding great. The students are aware that they will be reciting their letter in two weeks in front of a Green Screen. As such, this week we focussed on the oral communication component of our curriculum and discussed presentation skills. We look forward to sharing the videos with you when they are complete! If you could continue to discuss simple costume ideas at home with your child, that would be much appreciated!

We have a tentative date for when the students can come to school with their costumes. Due to separate filming times, students will bring their costumes on different days:

  • Students in Ms.Mary’s class (1B) can bring their costume in a bag on Tuesday, February 19th.

  • Students in Ms.Purcell’s class (1A) can come to school dressed in their costume (please have regular school uniform underneath or in a bag for the remainder of the day) on Wednesday, February 20th. Thank you for your assistance!

Math

In Math, we continue to explore time with the use of handheld miniature clocks, wipe on and off boards, pictures of clocks and apps. We have also begun to discuss simple addition and subtraction, particularly strategies for solving equations. We will dive into this even more next week and after the long weekend.

French

In French, due to the inclement weather, our field trip to see Gregg Lerock in concert on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 was cancelled. The field trip should be rescheduled to a future date. In other news, the students started to practise les questions partielles, which are partial questions. These are questions that hold part of the answer in the question. These are also questions that include words such as qui, ou, quand, comment, etc. In other words, these are questions using the words who, where, when and how and so on in French. These questions and answers will be practised in French to improve the students’ fluency.

Music

In Music, the Grade 1s are using the drums and glockenspiels to accompany their Valentine song, “Little Wheel”. The students also enjoyed using the streamers this week as they moved to music from Erik Satie’s gentle piano music to John Williams Darth Vader theme song.

Art

This week in Art, the Grade 1s are finishing up their art history project with lots of detail. If your child is in Art Club, it will be moving from Wednesdays to Fridays as of February 22nd. Students will be notified before this change occurs.

LOOKING AHEAD

We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on the morning of Thursday, February 14th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class.

GLOBAL PATHWAYS SCHOOL

Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School. Currently, a past Grade 9 ICE teacher, Jim Brickell, is the Principal of Global Pathways School.

The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by The York School community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.

Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to The York School, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
