What a busy, but fun, week! We enjoyed all the activities from Wellness Week and ended the week on a high note with a fun afternoon skating at Ramsden Park. We even joined our Learning Buddies mid-week to make a Valentine for someone special.
When we weren’t engaging in new and exciting activities this week, we finished up our unit on Telling Time and look forward to working on addition and subtraction strategies. We also put the finishing touches on our habitat letters and practised presentation skills. The students look forward to next week when they record themselves reading their letter in front of a green screen as their animal of choice! Please see below for when your child will be dressing up as their animal next week:
Due to separate filming times, students will bring their costumes on different days:
Students in Ms. Mary’s class (1B) can bring their costume in a bag on Tuesday, February 19th.
Students in Ms.Purcell’s class (1A) can come to school dressed in their costume (please have regular school uniform underneath or in a bag for the remainder of the day) on Wednesday, February 20th. Thank you for your assistance!
Presenting in front of a green screen isn’t the only thing the students will be doing next week for their Habitat unit. They will begin construction of a diorama with their group! On Wednesday, February 27th at 9:00am, we would love to invite you to the grade 1 classrooms to see the final product. We hope to see you there!
This week in Art, the Grade 1s finished their Art History project and also created drawings of what they did on their snow day. A reminder that students in Art Club will be attending on Fridays from now on, instead of Wednesday.
In Music, the Grade 1s did an amazing job accompanying themselves on the xylophone (wood), glockenspiel (metal), and drum while singing the Valentine’s song Little Wheel. The students also played a class game online called Poison Rhythm.
In French, the students have been practising les questions partielles which are questions with the words qui, ou, quand, comment, pourquoi, etc. (who, where, when, how and why). These questions have part of the answer within them. The students have been practising a rap about these questions in class. Please follow the link below to view the song:
In PHE this week, the grade 1’s continue their target game unit by learning to play bean bag bocce.
In French, on Tuesday, February 26th, 2019, Grade 1, 2 and 3 students will see Gregg LeRock in concert. This is the rescheduled date after the concert was postponed on Feb. 6th 2019. He is an educator and a musician who performs for children in French. Please follow the link below to see the Venturing Out form for this field trip.

GLOBAL PATHWAYS SCHOOL
Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School. Currently, a past Grade 9 ICE teacher, Jim Brickell, is the Principal of Global Pathways School.
The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by The York School community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.
Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to The York School, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
