We have had a great week in Grade 1 ! We have started investigating geometry which will include, naming and recognizing plane shapes and solids as well as finding lines of symmetry in our environment. In language, we are working on narratives which lead us nicely into our Unit of Inquiry. Thank you to the parents who have come in to talk to us about their professions and what led them to their career choices. Soon the children will choose a profession to research. On April 25th we will be hosting a Job Fair which will involve simple costumes much like our Habitat Unit. Students have chosen their career to highlight at the Job Fair. If you could talk to your child about possible costume options, that would be much appreciated. On April 25th, your child can come to school dressed with their career costume over their school uniform.
On April 26th, the students will be reciting a poem called “Families”. We have attached a copy of the poem. If you would like to practice with your child at home, that would be much appreciated! The poem can be accessed here.
In Music, the Grade 1s continue to learn dance steps to I’se the B’y. The students also discussed what makes a community and we are starting a song about people in our community.
In French, the students have continued reading our play, Le petit chat cherche une famille, in little groups along with the teacher. They did a wonderful job reading the play after being introduced to it very recently. Bon travail mes amis!
In PHE, the students finished off the hockey unit and will be starting a health unit next week. They will be looking at Canada’s new food guide and exploring why we need to eat healthy food.
This week in Grade 1, students used transparency paper to create a stained glass window. They first drew their design with Sharpie marker. Then, they used tissue paper to add colour to each section.
A gentle reminder that all student absences should be emailed to email@example.com.
As well, if your child arrives late, please have them sign in with Ms. Kate or reception.
International Week is Here!
The York School’s very first International Week is set to take place from Monday, April 15th to Thursday, April 18th. Students will participate in an international activity every day, culminating in a Parade of Nations and activity afternoon on Thursday, April 18th. Please send your child to school on Thursday with an outfit to represent their country, that they can change into after lunch. This could be clothing, jewelry, accessories, flags or cultural items. The Parade of Nations will take place from 1:15pm - 2:00pm on Thursday, April 18th and students will be following a parade route around the neighbourhood. Parents are welcome to come to this event. If you have any questions about International Week, please e-mail Andrea Hughes at firstname.lastname@example.org.
