Grade 1 - April 26/ 2019

What a fun week! The students enjoyed the opportunity to share with you what they have been learning about in our community helper unit. Thank you for taking the time to help with costumes and class visits! With the Job Fair and Grandpals Day, we’ve had the opportunity to develop our oral language and presentation skills, which will be further demonstrated next week during Student Led Conferences. The students are looking forward to sharing their learning with you!

We continued to work on story writing this week. To develop this skill even further, the students chose three cards (a character, an object and a setting) and built a story around the cards they chose. This is a fun way to dive into creative writing and reinforce story elements.

In math, we continued to explore 3-D shapes and symmetry. To help solidify these concepts, please look for shapes around you and reinforce the vocabulary that we have learned thus far (vertices, faces, edges, 2D, 3D, prism, etc).

Our upcoming Unit of Inquiry focuses on the energy around us. If you have any books or expertise to share, please don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know!

In Music, the students reviewed tempo and beat by dancing two different versions of I’se the B’y. The students also practiced their Grandpals Day songs.

This week in Art, students have begun creating a wire sculpture of a person from their community. They used Model Magic to create a base and colourful wire to create their person.

In French, the students continued to work on the play, Le petit chat cherche une famille.

This week in PHE, the students continued their dance unit. They finished off with a statue dance.

Grandpals and Special Friends Day

Thank you to all the Grandpals and Special Friends who visited the Junior School today! Students from the JK-Grade 2 classes were overjoyed to give you a glimpse of a day in the life here at The York School.

”You are teachers, playmates, caregivers and friends to these beautiful children. And, you are dearly loved. You provide the essentials that all children need and desire - unconditional love, comfort, kindness, patience and humour.”
