IXL is a comprehensive learning program offering unlimited math practice across thousands of skills—all of which are aligned to the provincial curriculum. One of the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home!

IXL is designed to help your child learn at his or her own pace. The program is adaptive and will adjust based on your child's demonstrated understanding of the material. All of your child's results will be saved, so you can monitor his or her progress anytime by clicking on Analytics. For on-the-go practice, you can download IXL’s free tablet apps for iPad, Android, or Kindle and sign in with your child’s username and password.

I hope you'll encourage your son or daughter to use IXL regularly. Here's to a year of working together to make learning fun for your child!

To get your child started on your home computer, please follow these easy steps:

Our first unit of inquiry on healthy living has now come to an end. Next week we will be exploring the 6 different types of simple machines (axels and wheels, levers, pulleys, inclined plane, wedge and screw). We are very excited that we will be having a scientist coming into school on October 22nd to run a workshop with the students on simple machines. We are looking for three parent volunteers from each class to help run centres. Each parent will be stationed at a centre and will be running that centre for the duration of the workshop following provided instructions and materials. If you can help, please contact Mr. Rand or Ms. Kendra.

The workshop times will be as follows:
Grade 2A: 12:45pm - 3:30pm
Grade 2B: 8:15am - 11:30am (with a 30 minute break for recess)

Watch out for Scholastic catalogues coming home this week. They are due back next Wednesday. Please remember orders can be completed online which makes ordering faster and simpler for everyone. Please remember: no cash, cheuqes only if you do send an order with your child to school. Thank you!

LITERACY: The children’s creativity has been flowing as we begin looking at different story elements in preparation for them to publish their own narrative.

MATH: Next week the children will be exploring place value and partitioning two-digit numbers into hundreds, tens and ones.

FRENCH: The students started to create les marionnettes (puppets) for our play, Ou est mon chien?. They have also been practising the gestures and saying the words (of the play) in small groups with the teacher with the rest of the class cutting and colouring their paper puppets.

MUSIC: We discussed different Hallowe’en characters and then moved to the music, “Funeral March of the Marionettes” by Charles Gounod. We are discussing sound and how instruments are made leading toward making our own instruments.

ART: the Grade 2s learned about Canadian artist Lawren Harris. Students discussed his work and style. They used a wood panel to create an art piece inspired by his mountainous landscapes. This week they added their dark colours and next week they will add highlights with light colours.
