Grade 2 - October 26 / 2018

This week, the grade 2’s had a great time conducting science experiments about simple machines with our visiting scientist. A big thank you to all the parents who came to help out with the day. If you have any examples of compound simple machines that your child could bring into class, please let us know. We would love to see them!

In math the children have had a lot of practice breaking two digit numbers into tens and ones and writing addition number sentences in expanded form. Next week we will dive deeper into place value by focusing on regrouping in two digit addition using concrete tools such as the base 10 and counters.

In English, the children have been busy writing their own stories using a variety of sentence openers and descriptive phrases. Next week, we will be busy editing our work before moving onto our final draft.

In French, the students started to read our play, Ou est mon chien?, in small groups with the teacher while the rest of the class coloured in the play. The students have also been singing, C’est l’Halloween! Listen along here: C'est l'Halloween!

This week in Art, the Grade 2’s worked with clay! Each student learned how to create a coil and used many clay coils to create a pot.

Physical Education

In PHE, the students are working on their first invasion games unit. They have been playing games and activities that require a team to advance an object into the other teams zone in order to score.

In Music, the Grade 2s played a new rhythm game identifying quarter notes, eighth notes and quarter rests. They also practiced a difficult pattern on the xylophone that accompanies our Hallowe’en song.
