Grade 2 - November 16 / 2018

This week students have been working hard on building a Rube Goldberg inspired machine in groups. The students are using their knowledge of simple and compound machines to design and build their machine. Students will be working on their machines for the next few weeks. We are inviting parents to see them in your child’s classroom on November 27th at 8:30 am. Please save the date.

We are looking to collect recycled materials to support their “machines”. For example paper towel rolls, tape rolls, shoe boxes.

In French, the students have started to work on their writing skills. They have been doing an activity called, Copy les mots et dessine. This is an activity where the students copy simple sentences about the play and draw a pictures to show their comprehension about the play

In Math, we are practising telling the time to the half hour and quarter of an hour. Students are learning how to write and tell the time both digitally and on an analog clock. Children are estimating the passage of time and comparing events using mathematical language.

This week in Art, the Grade 2s learned more about repetition. They used paper to cut identical shapes and used these shapes to show repetition in a cityscape. The Art room is currently looking for shoeboxes, wire hangers, and any clean, recycled materials.

In Music, the Grade 2s started to learn the first verse to “A Million Dreams”. This song will be sung by the entire school at the Holiday Concert in December. The Grade 2’s are also composing their own songs using the pentatonic (5 note) scale.

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
