The children have been busy constructing their compound machine for our showcase on Tuesday, November 27th from 8:30 AM - 9:00 AM. On the day of the showcase please ensure your child arrives to school promptly at 8:15 AM to ensure they have enough time to set up. Parents are welcome to attend, but please remain downstairs in the gathering place until we are ready to begin.
Scholastics will be sent home on Friday. Please return by Wednesday November 28th, 2018. We only accept online payments.
Unit of Inquiry
Our next Unit of Inquiry will be about how people use their traditions to celebrate and express their culture! We will start the unit towards the end of next week. If you would like to volunteer to come in and speak to the classes about one of your traditions, read a cultural story or share an artefact tied to one of your celebrations then please contact Mr. Rand or Ms. Kendra.
In French, the students have started to work on a new activity called les phrases folles (crazy sentences). This is a language manipulation activity where the students create funny sentences and show their creativity in French. At first, the students will copy sentences funny sentences and illustrate them to show their understanding. Then they will start to create their own. It is generally a very popular activity.
In Math, the children have been learning to read time (o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past) on an analogue clock and write the time digitally. Next week we will be moving onto looking at the values of coins and dollar bills and adding and subtracting money amounts to 100 cents.
This week in Art, the Grade 2s worked in groups to create posters for their compound machine designs. Students learned about focal point and created a title, description, drawing, and labels for each machine. On December 7th, the Grade 2s will be going on a Visual Arts related field trip to the Aga Khan Museum. Please e-mail me if you have any questions.
In Music, the Grade 2s have just started learning the dance that goes with our Diwali song, Joy. They will be performing this at the Harmony Concert on December 21st. The Grade 2s are also composing songs using the pentatonic (5 note) scale.
In PHE, the students have been actively participating in a variety of fitness activities such as, fitness stations, tag games and fitness games. We have started to talk about the importance of being physically active.
Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
SAVE THE DATE - December 14
*New* Junior School Celebration Assembly
On Friday, December 14th at 8:40 AM, students in Grades 1-5 will join together in the Junior School gym for our first Celebration Assembly.
The assembly is a time for the community to celebrate the many achievements this term - from math to music to sports - of students. The event will include recognizing student athletes from our fall teams: the U11 Girls’ basketball team, U9-U11 Cross country team, and the U-9 to U11 Soccer. There will be a choir performance celebrating our ‘vocal chops’ and the Junior School students who are participating in the Caribou Math Contest will be recognized as well.
Families are welcome to attend!
Instead of having one Junior School Athletic Assembly in June, this new Celebration Assembly format recognizes all student achievements including our student athletes each term.
As you can see by the fun tweet below, this event is always a huge hit at the Middle and Senior School!
