Grade 2 - January 12, 2018

Weekly Highlights

This week in Math, the students have been exploring the use of calendars and temperature. Next week, they will have a brief look at using money before reviewing and finishing off this unit in measurement.

In Literacy, the students are continuing to read fiction in their reading groups as well as writing using different forms of poetry.

In Unit of Inquiry, the students have been discussing various traditions their families may have during times of celebration. They have also been comparing and contrasting these traditions. Next week, we will be introducing the students to the summative for this unit, along with how to research facts.

In French, this week, we practised saying the date and saying our song about Winter, C’est l’hiver! We also practised our play, Ou est mon chien?, since the students will be filming their performances over the next few weeks.

C'est l'hiver!

Some new faces in Grade 2!

Mona Desai.jpg

My name is Mona Desai and I am so pleased to be back at the York School as the Primary Associate Teacher for Grades 1 and 2! I have worked at The York School previously as an Associate Teacher for Grades 3, 4 and 5 and have enjoyed supporting the teaches and the students. This past year I was on maternity leave to take care of my son Mikael who graced us with his presence on Christmas Day and he is an active little guy who keeps us very busy. I am so looking forward to getting reacquainted with all of the children each day as I spend time with them in their classrooms.

My name is Alison Roy and I am returning to the York School as the new Primary Music specialist. From 1993-1999, I taught Music and Grade 7 Core at The York School. I have spent the last seventeen years working for the TDSB as a Vocal Itinerant, working in eight schools a week, teaching teachers and their students about music. I have also worked as a professional musician in Toronto for 24 years singing primarily with Chamber Choirs such as The Elmer Iseler Singers, The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, The Elora Festival Singers, Choir 21 and St James Cathedral Choir. As a chorister I have sung for Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli and Roger Hodgson of Supertramp.  At the end of January, I, with the women of The Elmer Iseler SIngers, will be singing with the Toronto Symphony at Roy Thomson Hall and later in the year for the Harry Potter movie show.  I love all things choir and have directed Primary, Junior and Senior choirs. I am really looking forward to directing the Primary Choir at The York School. I am very excited to back at The York School and to become a part of this friendly community.

My name is Sheryl Faith and I'm an educator and a life-long artist who has always enjoyed surrounding myself with creative opportunities. I began my career in 2005 teaching Grade 5 at The York School for 6 years, then moved into the role of Middle School Director of Student Life and eventually became a grade 6 English/Humanities specialist. Two years ago, I moved to Melbourne with my Aussie husband and two little girls and worked at a wonderful PYP school as a Grade 6 teacher. I recently returned to Canada, and I'm so excited to be back in The York School community teaching Art in the Junior School!
