Highlights

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a relaxing break. We have had a busy start to Term 3. Students had a fantastic time at TIFF’s Digi PlaySpace on Tuesday interacting with various types of technology. This week, we also launched our new math unit on 2D and 3D shapes. Students are using polydrons to help explore during the inquiry.

In Art class, Grade 2 have completed their tessellating textile designs that will be turned into their very own fashion piece when transferred onto tote bags. The students are now doing a mini unit on printmaking using scratch foam and printing ink.

In French, the Grade 2’s started a new play, Les trois petits cochons, also known as, The Three Little Pigs. The students are very enthusiastic about this new play that we will be studying until the end of the year.

Looking Ahead

Next week we will wrap up our current Unit of Inquiry on Where we are in Place and Time. In partners, students will choose a piece of technology to research and create a timeline to document its evolution.

As part of an ongoing celebration of the myriad languages spoken in our community, students will have the opportunity to greet their peers in their mother tongue language during morning announcements. If your child is interested in showcasing their first language, please have them speak with Mme. Beatty.

Spring Fulford Debate Tournament

On Saturday the 21st of April, the York School is hosting the Spring Fulford Debate Tournament and we need judges! Established in 1949, the Fulford League is the oldest student debate league in Ontario. There will be about 16 CIS schools (York is not participating, as we host) debating in three rounds. The first two rounds are prepared: "This House (as Canada) would rescind Aung Sang Suu Kyi's honorary citizenship". There will be a briefing which will teach you how to judge debate, but if you can fill out a rubric, you're good!

The day will run from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and coffee, tea, snacks and lunch will be provided.

It would be great if you can join us and see what student debate looks like (it's actually quite delightful, in our humble, objective opinion). If you're free, please fill out the form here and join us!

Thanks,

Grace Nolan, Rob Burkett, and Shannon Barber
