Grade 2 - October 13 / 2017

Thank you again to Vikram and Timo for giving talks to the students about the body and how we can be healthy. The kids were highly engaged and it’s something they will remember for a long time.

New Scholastic book order forms are out. They will be due back in on Wed. Oct. 18 for both classes.

A reminder to please have your child bring in black shoes as we are now wearing winter uniform.

Thank you to parents who have volunteered to assist in our scientist in the school events on Monday. We are sure it will be a great event and your help is much appreciated.

The students have begun their summative activity for our unit of inquiry to show us what they have learned. They are have chosen a weekend event (sports tournament, cottage, playdate, family visiting, etc.) and four things they would need to be safe and healthy during that time.

The Number Relations unit is underway. The students have been learning to recognize numbers through number lines and manipulatives. The students are going to be using the elements of place value to develop their addition and subtraction strategies.

In French, students have become very comfortable with saying most of the words and gestures of the play, Ou est mon chien?.

In Music, we continue to expand the texture of Orff orchestrations to include ostinato. In addition, students were singing in preparation for Michael Mitchell’s visit as well as vocal improvisations for a Halloween song. Singing is also including partner songs - two melodies that can be performed as independent voices, but that work well together.

In Visual Arts, the Grade 2s will be working on an inventive art piece that will require using recyclable materials as building blocks. I am now collecting a variety of recyclables such as toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, containers, small boxes (cracker boxes, etc) egg cartons, etc. If you are able to donate it would be very much appreciated!

If your child is going to be absent, please send an email to the homeroom teacher and attendance (

As well, if your child will be attending aftercare, please send an email to be sent to the homeroom teacher and Carol Klestinec (

Mathematics Apps

There are so many play-based apps that help children develop not only their math skills but as their conceptual understanding of mathematics that are age-appropriate. Below is a list of some highly recommended apps from respected mathematics educator and researcher, Jo Boaler (@joboaler,
