This week, the children have been busy researching an unfamiliar holiday as part of their summative assessment for our Unit of Inquiry. The children will be creating a poster and present their chosen celebration to the class next week. We have enjoyed learning about how people express their culture through celebrations and traditions.
In Math, the students have been working on subtraction. They have benefited from practical activities using concrete objects and tools such as number lines and hundreds squares to understand the concept of taking away. We have also practiced working out the difference between two numbers by counting on.
This week in Art, the Grade 2s created art inspired by the upcoming Chinese New Year. Students read the book, The Willow Pattern Story, by Allan Drummond in the library with Ms. Spencer. They then created plate designs inspired by Chinese ceramics created in blue and white.
The art room is always looking for recycled materials for free art time and Art Club. If you have any boxes, containers, toilet paper rolls, cardboard, or anything else you can think of, we would love to take it in the art room!
In Music, the Grade 2s are learning solfege syllables by playing the game SoLaMi against me. So far they have won against me twice! The Grade 2s are also listening to different styles of music as we partner dance to The Noble Duke of York. The Grade 2s also did really well on a new rhythm game using rhythm playing cards.
JUNIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY
Beginning next week the children will be uploading words from their word sorts onto their Seesaw account. This will give the children an opportunity to practice their spelling words at home. As well, next week, we will begin looking at how to structure a simple paragraph using an introduction, supporting ideas and a concluding sentence.
In Math, we will be continuing on with subtraction and how to regroup when subtracting two-digit numbers. The children will be using the base ten in order to understand the process of changing tens into ones to make subtracting easier.
Next week in PHE, the grade 2 students will be starting a target game unit. They will be playing games that will be working on sending an object towards a target while avoiding any obstacles. They will be working on key skills and strategies for games like bocce ball, bowling, and curling.
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on the morning of Thursday, February 14th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class.
Our school-wide Wellness Week is coming up! Please see the poster below for each days.
