Grade 2 - February 1 / 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

Thank you to all the parents who joined us for our Student Centred Conferences. We look forward to seeing the rest of you next week.

Students did a fantastic job researching, creating and presenting in partners an unfamiliar celebration, as part of our summative task on for the unit on How we Express Ourselves.

Next week, we will kick off our new unit on Where we are in Time and Place. Students will explore the evolution of technology and how it continues to impact our daily lives. Mr. Shaikh, our IT Support Teacher, will be working with the Grade 2’s teaching them basic coding skills.

Math

Students continue to practise strategies to aid them with addition and subtraction regrouping problems. Currently we are focusing on regrouping with subtraction. Students continue to use mental math, base tens and number lines to help them solve problems.

French

In French, the students have been practising les questions totales, that is total questions. This is a language manipulation activity where the students answer questions orally and in writing where the question contains the answer. For example, a question totale would be Est-ce que Madame est une fille ou un garcon?, the answer would be Madame est une fille. The students have been gesturing, saying and writing these questions to improve their fluency in French.

Music

In Music, the Grade 2s reviewed the 5 note pentatonic scale and with a partner found the pitches on the xylophones for the song, “Bow, wow, wow”. The Grade 2s  continue practicing their rhythms in a rhythmic Tic Tac Toe game.

Art

This week in Art, the Grade 2s used clay to create an All-About-Me-Totem-Pole. They chose three symbols to represent things they enjoy and created them using clay. They also made a strong base to ensure that their sculpture could balance.

WELLNESS WEEK - FEBRUARY 11-14, 2019

MORPHOLOGY MAGIC

Dear York Families,
We are pleased to report that Learning Strategies teachers Robyn Tarshis and Susan Gray will be offering a new club this term called Morphology Magic.

Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. We will analyze the structure of words and parts of words, such as bases, prefixes, and suffixes. Morphology gives us an opportunity to play with words in a multisensory, playful approach. We will have fun creating word sums and matrixes such as these!

This program will be open to students in Grades 2 - 4, but spaces are limited! If you wish to have your child join us, please email sgray@yorkschool.com or rtarshis@yorkschool.com. Please join us for either Tuesday or Wednesday in the Learning Strategies room from 3:45 to 4:45 pm. The start dates are Tuesday, February 12 or Wednesday, February 13. We look forward to seeing your kids there!

In French, on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, Grade 1, 2 and 3 students will see Gregg LeRock in concert. He is an educator and a musician who performs for children in French. Please follow the link below to see the Venturing Out form for this field trip.
