Grade 2 - March 29 / 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

The children have settled back into school after the March break. They were excited to write their 2nd letter to their pen pal in Portugal and we are looking forward to receiving their replies. We also finished our unit on data management by looking at how to organize data using pictographs and varying the scale used. We were also very excited to continue working with Mr. Shaikh on designing and programming our maze game.

French

In French, the students were introduced this week to a new play, Les trois petits cochons (The Three Little Pigs). The students will be working on this play until the end of the school year.

PHE

In PHE this week, the students continued with the Net/Wall unit. They enjoyed playing Lobsterball and Reaction 21.

Art

In Art class, the students worked on glazing skills, using a few ceramic pieces they made before our March Break.

Music

In Music, the Grade 2s have started to learn solfege hand signs. The students sang Frere Jacques with hand signs and then sang in a canon (round). The Grade 2s also made body percussion sounds to sound like a storm and then listened to Rossini’s The Storm to hear how a composer can use instruments to sound like something else.

Attendance Reminder

A gentle reminder that all student absences should be emailed to 1639attendance@yorkschool.com.
As well, if your child arrives late, please have them sign in with Ms. Kate or reception.

LOOKING AHEAD

Scholastics have were distributed this week. We request that you have them returned by next Wednesday.

Next week, we will begin our new Unit of inquiry and our central idea will be how changes to air and water affect living things and the environment. We will be inquiring into how air and water are essential elements of the environment, the connection between changes to air, water and living things and the impact of people's actions on the state of air and water.

In Math, we will also be moving onto geometry and exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We will be using geoboards, tessellation pieces and shape nets to help them develop their understanding about the faces, edges and vertices of shapes.
