Grade 2 - May 10 / 2019

A lot of exciting conversation has been taking place regarding our new unit on protecting animals. The children have been reading books and watching videos on how animals are classified. They have used this knowledge to identify and sort mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish. We have also been learning about animal adaptations and how these help animals survive in their natural habitats.

In Mathematics, we have introduced the concept of multiplication by looking at repeated addition and making equal groups of objects. The children also used their knowledge of counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to help them solve multiplication products.

In French, the students continued to complete a language manipulation activity called Choisis le bon mot (choose the right word). The students need to read a sentence with a missing word, select the correct word between two choices of words and write the appropriate answer. This activity helps with reading and writing comprehension in French. The sentences were about our play, Les trois petits cochons.

In Music, the Grade 2s discussed how to help the planet and practiced the song Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The students also sang and danced to a rap about the water cycle. The Grade 2s were really focussed as they sang Frere Jacques in a four-part round.

In PHE, the Grade 2’s worked on the technique for standing long jump and were introduced to shot put by throwing a bean bag first and then getting to throw a light weight shot put.

In Art class, the Grade 2s had fun tie-dying various clothing items this week. They are looking forward to taking their creations home next week.
