Grade 2 - August 22 / 2019

Dear Junior School Families,

We are looking forward to warmly welcoming your family back to school.

The Junior School Faculty is off to a wonderful start. Last week we enjoyed a full week of learning together in preparation for the upcoming academic year. The energy level in the Junior School is high and we all enjoyed re-connecting with colleagues and introducing new faculty members to The York School community.

There are a number of new faces in the Junior School this year and we look forward to welcoming new families to our community. We also have a number of new teachers joining our faculty at the Junior School as well as a few changes in roles and responsibilities of some of our current faculty.

Firstly, most everything you need to know for the first days of school is in our WELCOME PACKAGE sent out in May. In this edition of the FLASH we have included some important information that will serve as useful reminders to ease your transition from summer to school:

  • Key contacts and dates

  • Junior School Pick-Up and Drop-Off routines (Please see the information below).

As we foster independence, student agency and re-introduce school routines, we ask of parents the following:

  • If you walk your child(ren) into the school or pick them up, please do so in the reception area. Grades 1-5 parents should refrain from going upstairs unless there is an exceptional circumstance, as all students should proceed to the playground area.

  • Allow your child(ren) to carry their own backpacks. This fosters independence, student agency and responsibility.

  • Prepare ahead of time for pick-up, drop-off and play dates. Students will not be permitted to use the school phone to make playdates.

Thursday September 12th, Junior School Curriculum Night - We look forward to welcoming all parents to our Junior School Curriculum Night on Thursday September 12th at 6:30 pm where we will introduce our faculty, share our learning goals for the year and provide the opportunity for you meet your child(ren)’s teachers and learn more about the programme.

In the meantime, as a reminder to our returning parents and for the benefit of our new parents regarding the leadership of the Junior School, we want you to know that we deeply value the home-school partnership and want to ensure that communication is clear, consistent and collaborative.

As we continue to work toward a model of shared leadership in the Junior School, please be mindful that we encourage you to address any question or concern with your child’s teacher first.

Curriculum - If you have a question or concern about curriculum, please contact Yochabel De Giorgio, our Junior School Director of Curriculum.

Before/Aftercare, co-curricular programmes - If you have a question or concern about Before/Aftercare, co-curricular programmes, the JS Welcome Package or other academic operations, please contact Karen McCallum-Ryan, our Junior School Director of Academic Operations.

Finally, if you have a question or concern about something else related to your child or the Junior School in general, please contact me to set up a call or meeting.

We are excited to welcome you back in the coming weeks; in the meantime, we wish a you a wonderful end to your summer vacation and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

Sincerely,
Val Turner
Junior School Principal
