This week, the Grade 3s worked hard on drafting their Cinderella stories. Last week, we focussed on making our story plans and this week we got to writing our first drafts. The students have been so creative and thoughtful with their stories. A few titles include: The Trinidad Cinderella, Fabrizo: the Italian Cinderella, The Israeli Cinderella, amongst so many more!
One element of their Cinderella stories includes a cultural artifact that represents their own beliefs and values. On Wednesday, the students built their own artifacts and we will be showing them off next week when we invite another grade to see them in a museum-style presentation. See here for pictures from our morning of building.
In math this week, we worked on drawing bar graphs. Students created 2 bar graphs - the first version was a diagnostic assessment to see what students already knew about drawing a bar graph. We then went back to a few of these examples and focused on what we could learn from our mistakes - this is part of modeling a growth mindset! We developed a list of criteria and created a second bar graph. Students’ progress was immediate and well documented through this process.
In French, students are strongly encouraged to spend time on the AIM portal watching the video of the play and/or practising their gestures.
New Online Learning Tool: IXL
As mentioned in last week’s Flash, we will be assigning the following questions for math homework next week. Please see our letter to parents about how and why we’re using it. Log-in information is also included.
IXL is in lieu of the POW and we will be tracking students’ time spent on their IXL practice. The goal is to spend a minimum of 30 minutes next week reading and interpreting graphs. Below are the questions we would like your child to focus on. Please choose with your child that is comfortable for them to do independently. Should you have any difficulty with the new routine, please speak with your child’s homeroom teacher.

Mark your calendars for our next field trip to the Ontario Science Centre. It will be on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017. We will be participating in one hands-on workshop, Building Structures, and viewing the IMAX film, Dream Big. This will serve as a provocation for our new unit of inquiry on How the World Works. Please read here for the Venturing Out Form. We still need 2 parent volunteers for 3B (Ms. Cummings’ class) to join us.
Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
