Grade 3 - December 15 /2017

HIGHLIGHTS

What a fantastic celebration of learning on Wednesday morning! The classrooms were filled with delight at the chance for students to share their creative writing and amazing artifacts with you. We hope that you enjoyed this opportunity to share your children’s unique talents with you. Here are some pictures from Wednesday’s event.

Thank you for all of your help in making Spirit Week such a success. The outfits and accessories were amazing. We appreciate all of the effort it takes to add this extra task to your daily routine. Thank you!

In Math, we continue to investigate 2D shapes. We have been working on the following objectives:

  1. Use attributes to describe figures.
  2. Name figures and compare their attributes.
  3. Compare and sort figures.
  4. Describe angles are greater than or less than a right angle.
  5. Match and describe congruent figures.

Next week, we will begin our investigation into 3D shapes.

This will be our last math unit of the year. We will begin working on the concept of multiplication in the new year.

Thank you for helping to support with IXL at home. It seems like everything is running smoothly. Please let us know if you need any help with logging in.

In Inquiry, we are beginning to learn about different types of structures.

We will be investigating the following lines of inquiry in this unit:

  • How a structure has both form and function (form)
  • How structures need to be strong and stable to be useful (function)
  • How structures are affected by forces acting on them (causation)

In French, students are strongly encouraged to spend time on the AIM portal watching the video of the play and/or practising their gestures. Quizlet is another engaging online tool to build vocabulary related to the play, Comment y aller.

LOOKING AHEAD

Next Thursday, the Grade 3 Class Parents are organizing a holiday party last period in homeroom. There will be snacks, crafts and games to play. We will be asking the children, if they choose, to bring in their favourite board game to play. Thank you in advance to all the parents for their help with the party.

In preparation for the all-school concert on December 20th, Grade 3 students will be visiting the Senior School campus on Monday December 18th from 8.45-10 a.m. Students will spend some time in the gym (the performance venue), have a tour, visit a Grade 10 music class to rehearse This is My Home, and perform their song in the Learning Commons. Please join us for the concert on December 20th in the Senior School Gym at 10.30am.

New Online Learning Tool: IXL

We are assigning the following questions for math homework next week. Please see our letter to parents about how and why we’re using it. Log-in information is also included.

IXL is in lieu of the POW and we will be tracking students’ time spent on their IXL practice. The goal is to spend a minimum of 30 minutes. Below are the questions we would like your child to focus on. Please choose with your child that is comfortable for them to do independently. Should you have any difficulty with the new routine, please speak with your child’s homeroom teacher.

REMINDERS

Please send all attendance-related (pick up, drop off or absence) e-mails to 1639attendance@yorkschool.com as well as your child’s homeroom teacher. If you are e-mailing regarding a change in pick up, please do so before 1 pm as we are often working with the children last period and do not get a chance to check e-mail before dismissal. This will ensure that the message is received and passed on for safe pick up.

Winter temperatures have arrived. During the school day, students in Grades 1 - 5 are outside for recess three times a day and at the end of the day for pick up/aftercare.

To fully enjoy the excitement that the winter season brings, appropriate winter clothing will enhance their outdoor experience.

Grade 4 and 5 students are expected to make good choices in the clothing they wear outside for recess. Once outside, they are not permitted to go back inside to get pieces of clothing that they forgot to put on. We encourage them to be responsible for their choices.

Important Dates

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
