Grade 3 - January 12, 2018

HIGHLIGHTS

Welcome back! We were so excited to welcome back your children on Tuesday and to hear their interesting stories about the break. We hope that you all had a wonderful and relaxing winter break! We look forward to seeing you over the next few weeks.

In Math, we will investigate the properties of 3D shapes. We will be examining a variety of 3D shapes to identity the number of faces, edges and vertices. We will also be dissecting these shapes to see what their net looks like.

In Unit of Inquiry, we will be delving into the question of what makes a structure strong and stable. We will be using a variety of building materials to consider the elements that create a strong stable structure. The summative task for this unit will be to create their own structure that is both strong and stable.

In Literacy, we will be looking at the reading strategy of monitoring comprehension. We will also be examining the features of non-fiction texts and writing some of our own.

We will be beginning to teach cursive writing this term. Each day we will spend some time practising the letters in cursive and then learn how to join them.

In French, students received their assigned roles for the play Comment y aller before the break. They are encouraged to practise their lines at home in preparation for the final performance taking place early February. They can access the play through the AIM Portal. More details on the final performance will be shared in the coming weeks.

A new face in Grade 3!

My name is Sheryl Faith and I'm an educator and a life-long artist who has always enjoyed surrounding myself with creative opportunities. I began my career in 2005 teaching Grade 5 at The York School for 6 years, then moved into the role of Middle School Director of Student Life and eventually became a grade 6 English/Humanities specialist. Two years ago, I moved to Melbourne with my Aussie husband and two little girls and worked at a wonderful PYP school as a Grade 6 teacher. I recently returned to Canada, and I'm so excited to be back in The York School community teaching Art in the Junior School!
