Dear Junior School Parents,
Thank you to all the families that joined us for our parent feedback meetings over the past week. We received lots of great feedback on what we are doing well and suggestions for areas where we can do even better.
For those parents that were unable to join us, we would like to offer you an opportunity to add your voices. During the meetings we asked for feedback through the following "compass points" lenses:
N - what information do you Need to know
S - what Support do you need? From whom?
E - what Excites you about the Junior School?
W - what are you Worried about?
If you would like to provide your feedback, please send it to Kate Boynton at firstname.lastname@example.org (JS Admin Assistant) an email with the NSEW headline by Wednesday, January 31st.
We look forward to sharing the feedback from all parents in the FLASH next week and scheduling a meeting for all Junior School parents to follow up with next steps.
Thank you for being partners in your children's education.
Valerie and Struan
In Math, we have been learning about multiplication. We have been making arrays to show that all multiplication equations can be shown with a rectangle. This also facilitates the understanding that multiplication is all about equal groups of numbers. Next week, we will begin to look at the relationship between multiplication and division.
In Inquiry, we have been having lots of fun! We have been making hypotheses about the strength and stability of structures. The students have been testing structures made from different shapes and testing them to see if they can hold a load. The students have also chosen to study one particular structure. They are researching interesting facts and displaying this information in a Google Slides presentation.
In Guided Reading, we have been focussing on the reading strategy of monitoring comprehension, as well as, identifying the features of nonfiction texts.
In French, students are learning some Gregg LeRock songs in preparation for his concert on Wednesday April 25th! Please check out the link to listen to the songs at home!
In PSE classes this term, we will focus on how we are all changemakers. A changemaker is someone who wants change and uses skills and resources, such as teamwork, knowledge and empathy to help affect this change. We will begin by focussing on our school as a place where change happens; and discuss the change we can see and the change we want to see. By end of term we will celebrate ourselves as changemakers and the positive impact of our efforts.
On February 7th or 13th, students in Grade 1 to 5 will be participating in Student-centred conferences. A Student-centred conference differs from the traditional Parent-Teacher interview as the student is present at and is an active participant. The focus of the conference is on student goal setting in order to support learning. During the Student-centred conference, each participant - teacher, student, parent - have a specific role. The teacher facilitates the discussion and the student and parent are encouraged to contribute. A Student-centred conference should focus on recognising and celebrating the progress that a student has made in his/her learning and to identify the next steps that need to be taken, within a supportive environment. Parents should be aware that the priority of Student-centred conferences is to focus on discussing student’s progress in ways which motivate and encourage the child in his/her future learning. Finally, a Student-centred conference is not intended to be a rehearsed ‘performance’ by the student, but a genuine conversation that encourages objective and realistic discussion of the student’s learning progress.
A reminder that students in Grades 1 to 5 need to present with parents at all conferences with homeroom and specialist teachers.
