David Nurse Basketball Sessions

This past weekend, our York School students had the opportunity to participate in some basketball sessions run by NBA and international shooting skills coach, David Nurse. The sessions were incredibly informative, and we even had a visit by Toronto Raptors, Norm Powell and Ogugua Anunoby!  #goglads

This week in homeroom, we spent time inquiring into specific children’s rights that should be respected and protected. We also viewed different Public Service Announcements advocating for children’s rights and developed the following criteria for a strong PSA: memorable, persuasive and clear message. Next week, we will be doing research and script writing for our own PSA advocating for the protection of a specific children’s right.

In math, we continued exploring the concept of fractions by looking at fractions of a whole, fractions of a length and naming fractions. If you would like your child to do some extra practice on naming and comparing fractions, they can log on to IXL at home through the Junior School resources page and work through the section in Grade 3 Y1-7.

In art, Grade 3s are making connections with their unit of inquiry on human rights. They are learning that Keith Haring’s style of using simple colours, shapes and lines can be a powerful tool to communicate their ideas. They will eventually be creating their own Keith Haring t-shirt design based on a chosen children’s right.

On Wednesday, the students wore pink in support of The International Day of Pink. This is one way that we have all stood up for the right to express ourselves. The children watched this video and we had a very touching discussion as a whole grade about our rights and responsibilities as students at The York School.

In music, students are still excited about their new recorders. We learned how to play note A, so now they can play two notes. For practice, students are still working on making the best sound possible by using a gentle air flow and covering the holes with the left hand. For all woodwind instruments, the left hand is positioned on top, a technique we enforce for our new Grade 3 recorder students!. Students will be going home with their recorder books on Monday which contains a CD with the accompaniments. Using the accompaniments will enhance your listening experience. Practice expectation is a minimum of ten minutes every other day.

The dates for filming the French play, Comment y aller, have been set! Please see the separate email sent to all parents with specific details. For your quick reference, here are the dates:

  • 3A French: Thursday April 19 (Groups 1, 2 & 3), Friday April 20 (Groups 4 & 5)
  • 3B French: Tuesday April 17 (Groups 1, 2 & 3), Wednesday April 18 (Groups 4 & 5)

Our focus in PSE this term will be on developing self-awareness and self-management skills using The Superflex program. The program introduces 14 “Thinkables” and 14 “Unthinkables” characters. These characters personify aspects of our thinking mind that can create unwanted or wanted behaviours. By learning Superflex powers, students gain self-awareness and self-management skills. The first Superflex power we have discussed is Noticing Power. Students reflected on their top Thinkable and Unthinkable and where and when they might appear. Noticing the characters in oneself, without judgement, is an important step to building self-awareness skills.

Looking Ahead

As part of an ongoing celebration of the myriad languages spoken in our community, students will have the opportunity to greet their peers in their mother tongue during morning announcements. If your child is interested in showcasing their first language, please have them speak with Mme. Beatty.

On Wednesday, April 25th, Grades 1-3 will be seeing the talented Gregg LeRock in concert en français! Students are encouraged to listen to Gregg LeRock’s music at home by clicking on the link here.

WE Week

Next week (April 16th - April 20th) is WE Week. The students will be participating in activities in class throughout the week with a different theme each day. The themes are based on the WE Villages Pillars. For more information visit the WE organization website.

Along with classroom activities, the Student Action Team will be leading the following initiatives.

Children of Hope Uganda Jewellery Sale  

Please look for our Student Action Team in the Gathering Place during drop-off. They will be selling jewellery to help support Children of Hope Uganda. This initiative was brought forth by one of our house captains who feels strongly about supporting education and opportunity. Children of Hope Uganda (COHU) is a non-profit organization which works to empower war-affected youth impacted by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in Northern Uganda. To date, COHU has helped transform the lives of over 1100 youth through a two-part development model which aims to promote self-sustainability through supporting social enterprise and education. Zinc Saves Lives Battery Recycling

Throughout the week we will be collecting used batteries for Zinc Save Lives battery recycling campaign. For every battery we recycle as a school, Teck will donate the cash equivalent to the value of zinc it contains to WE’s zinc and health programme in Kenya. For more information, check out this fact sheet. Please bring all your used batteries to be recycled, and help dispose of them in a safe way and donate to this worthy cause. Donation bins will be in the Gathering Place from Monday, April 16th - Friday, April 20th.

Junior School Showcase

We are in the midst of students working hard to prepare their performances. Please note, there has been a change in the dates and times of the Showcases.

Grades 1-2: Friday, April 27th 9:15 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Grades 3-5: Friday, May 4th 9:15 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Parents of students participating in a showcase are invited to attend. Each student may present for a maximum of 90 seconds. Videos may also be submitted to be shown during the showcase. If you have any questions, please email Jessica Smart at

The Showcase

  • Builds our Junior School community
  • Celebrates interests and passions of students
  • Demonstrates the diversity of students
  • Develops independent self-management skills

The Showcase process:

  • Students will attend at least two practices between Tuesday, April 3rd and Thursday, April 12th.

To participate, students and families need to make the following commitments:

  • Prepare, practice and rehearse performance
  • One audition at school
  • One rehearsal at school
  • Be at school at 8:00 a.m. on the day of the showcase
  • Be responsible for props and any accessories needed

Spring Fulford Debate Tournament

On Saturday, April 21st The York School is hosting the Spring Fulford Debate Tournament and we need judges! Established in 1949, the Fulford League is the oldest student debate league in Ontario. There will be about 16 CIS schools (as host, York is not participating) debating in three rounds. The first two rounds are prepared: "This House (as Canada) would rescind Aung Sang Suu Kyi's honorary citizenship." There will be a briefing which will teach you how to judge debate, but if you can fill out a rubric, you're good!

The day will run from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and coffee, tea, snacks and lunch will be provided.
