Grade 3 - November 8 / 2018

HIGHLIGHTS

What a fantastic trip to the Science Centre! It certainly stirred a lot of interest about our new unit on structures. We can’t wait to find out some of those answers. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers and to Mr. Doust for joining us.

Unit of Inquiry

This week, we have begun our new Unit of Inquiry. This unit falls under the theme of How the World Works. The central idea for this unit is: All structures are built with a common set of rules.  The lines of inquiry are:

  1. How a structure has both form and function (form)

  2. How structures need to be strong and stable to be useful (function)

  3. How structures are affected by forces acting on them (causation)

We began the unit with the Marshmallow structure challenge. The students were asked to create the tallest structure with the following materials: 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 marshmallow, 1 metre of string and 1 metre of tape. Please see the pictures and videos on SeeSaw.

Math

In Math, we have been looking at strategies for adding subtract 2- and 3-digit numbers. We have been using hands-on materials (Base 10 blocks) to facilitate and develop a conceptual understanding of these 2 operations. Many students have had experience with the stacking method; however, we have found that their memorization of the process does not always ensure their understanding of the concept. We will build upon this understanding by looking at a variety of mental math strategies for both addition and subtraction.

Music

In Music, students are still working on increasing their fluency and confidence while playing notes B, A and G. Students will be making their recorder performance debut at assembly on Friday, November 16th at 8.30am. Parents are welcome to attend.

Art

This week in Art, the Grade 3s finished their variety collages. The food items they have created using shape and texture look fantastic!

JUNIOR SCHOOL ATHLETICS

If you have registered your child for the Athlete Institute for the High Performance basketball led by led by NBA and International Shooting/Skills Development Coach, David Nurse please note there has been a change in dates due the gym being used for the Drama Production. Our next contest will be taking place Wednesday November 14th, 2018 at 8:30 AM in the cafeteria.

The next interactive question will be the DOTS game. This can be accessed on our Games/History page. It will not be accessible one day before the contest and not during the 2 contest days since the web site can be used to solve the contest question and because when some parts of the world still have Tuesday, other parts have already Wednesday, i.e. contest day.

Students are welcomed to practice at home! If you have any questions, please contact kmccallum-ryan@yorkschool.com.
