Get your explorer’s cap on! What is exploration and what does it involve? What are the steps that people take to explore? These are just a few of the provocations that got the Grade 3s thinking about exploration and why people explore new things. We began the week by looking at zoomed-in photos and asking, what is it and how do you know? Students used their prior knowledge to make connections and inferences, just like we do in reading to create understanding. We also had many rich discussions about the attributes of many well-known explorers.
Our first focus is on patterning and place value. In this unit, your child will:
- investigate patterns on a hundred chart, and use these patterns to skip count
- count on a number line, and use a number line to compare and round numbers
- group by 10s to count
- use Base Ten materials to model and record 2- and 3-digit numbers
- Explore different ways to represent numbers
Place value is the foundation for number sense. A solid understanding of place value is essential to develop a strong number sense and an understanding of all computational methods.

Co-Curricular Programme Registration
Online registration registration for the Fall 2017 Co-Curricular Programme has commenced and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10th. Please refer to the Fall 2017 Co-Curricular Programme Guide (which is also online).
Programmes commence the week of September 18th.
At The York School, we constantly reflect on and review our practices, ensuring that the values of The York School are present in each classroom and assigned homework. As a faculty, we reviewed current research and understanding of development and learning, and reflected on our homework policy. We are happy to share the new Junior School Homework Policy. The policy is an articulation of current and best practices. It is considerate of young learners’ development and the importance of balancing school and family.
In alignment with the new policy, students in Grades 4 and 5 will continue to use IXL as one possible resource, while students in JK to Grade 3 will not.

There are 2 field trips coming up right away. The Grade 3s will be heading to Black Creek Pioneer Village on Monday, September 18 and to Kortright Centre on Wednesday, September 20th. They are both full-day field trips. The links to the Venturing Out forms are below. We are looking for volunteers for both trips. If you would like to come, please let us know.
Terry Fox Run
On Friday, September 15th, the Junior students, staff, parents and guests will join together for the 24th annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. All students are to come to school wearing their gym uniform and running shoes or an official Terry Fox t-shirt from 2017 or before.
At 1:15 p.m., all Kindergarten to grade 5 students will gather in their houses and participate in warm-up, Terry Fox team building activities and a walk/run along the Kay Gardner Beltline. If you would like to order a 2017 Terry Fox t-shirt (a great souvenir of a memorable day and 75% of the price of the of the t-shirt cost benefits cancer research!), please have your child return this T-shirt Order Form to Ms. Hickman as soon as possible as quantities and sizes are limited.
