Grade 3 - October 5 / 2017

HIGHLIGHTS:

The Grade 3s had a very productive week in spite of it being a shortened week due to our Thanksgiving long weekend. We completed a full round of guided reading, which included small group instruction in reading with a focus on making predictions while reading. Students also began their spelling sorts and were introduced to some new spelling routines to help them master their spelling patterns. Students also worked on their writing by drafting a plan for a journal and then writing it out.

In math, we used number lines to skip count, compare and round numbers. We worked on problem-solving together as a whole class, in partners and independently throughout the week. We are really proud to see students shifting their mindset and have heard many students praising one another for trying a solution or simply saying, “I don’t quite get it… yet”. Thank you for your continued support in this area. Struggle is a part of learning and it’s when the best learning takes place. Stay tuned for more motivational posters in your child’s home folder.

In addition to the AIM student portal, students can also build French vocabulary related to our play with a fun and engaging computer game called Quizlet. Here is the link.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Junior School will be collecting gently used costumes from Monday, October 2 to Friday, October 13th. Bins will be in the Gathering Place for items.

Michael Mitchell Canada is for Kids Performance - Friday, October, 13th
We have the privilege of welcoming Michael Mitchell to the Junior School next Friday, October 13th. Michael Mitchell is an award-winning singer, songwriter and storyteller. He is on a never-ending mission to stir up some patriotic spirit in the hearts and minds of all Canadians through lively songs and humorous stories of our history, geography and some of the wacky oddities that identify us as Canadians. He is also the former co-host of the CTV children’s program Story Time, and has also written and recorded songs for Sesame Street and PBS. In honour of this special guest and in celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, students and staff will have a Red and White and/or Canadian apparel casual day on Friday, October 13th.
