Grade 3 - October 13 / 2017

The Grade 3s enjoyed an amazing performance by the Kenyan Boys Choir on Tuesday afternoon. The Choir sang a collection of songs and brought an amazing energy to the Junior School. At one point, all the children were up dancing with the Choir. It was a real honour to be in their presence.

This week in math, we introduced addition strategies using doubling and near doubles. We also went through the steps to problem solving including how to get started on a multi-step problem and how to communicate your thinking so that you answer the question.

We also started another round of guided reading with a focus on making predictions and using evidence from the text to support your thinking. We used the acronym R.A.C.E to help frame our answers.

During inquiry, we explored the features of 3 First Nations communities: Mohawk of Khanawake, Anishinabek of the Saugeen Peninsula and the Metis of Sault Ste. Marie.

In addition to the AIM student portal, students can also build French vocabulary related to our play with a fun and engaging computer game called Quizlet. Here is the link.

We will be beginning our next unit of inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, in the coming weeks. The central idea is: Culture is an expression of the beliefs and values that we share with others. We are asking the children to bring in one cultural artifact that represents their culture. We will discuss why this object is special and how it represents their culture. Please do not send anything that is too precious or priceless in terms of sentimental value.

This week was the start of our winter uniform policy. Please ensure that your child has a pair of indoor black shoes, non-marking gym shoes, as well as an outdoor pair of shoes. Thank you for your cooperation.

If your child is going to be absent, please send an email to the homeroom teacher and attendance (

As well, if your child will be attending aftercare, please send an email to be sent to the homeroom teacher and Carol Klestinec (

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
