Grade 3 - October 20 / 2017


HIGHLIGHTS:

The Grade 3 students enjoyed a performance by Michael Mitchell last Friday. Mr. Mitchell is an award-winning Canadian singer and songwriter. He sang lots of songs related to Canada’s heritage and beauty. It was a real treat to have him at The York School. The assembly was absolutely electric!

This week in math, we continued to work on our addition and subtraction strategies. We began using Base 10 materials to work on addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers. We use Base 10 materials to ensure that our students have a strong conceptual understanding of how addition and subtraction work.

You may have noticed that we have been periodically sending growth mindset statements in the Homework File. These are things that we have been discussing in class. We want our students to develop a growth mindset in all areas of the curriculum. We encourage you to talk to your children about these statements.

In writing, the students are publishing their final copy of a diary entry written from the perspective of an early settler, black settler or First Nation child. They successfully incorporated their knowledge of these early Canadian communities into their writing. We look forward to sharing them with you.

During inquiry, the students worked on their final project for the Where We Are in Place and Time unit of inquiry. They will be interviewed from the perspective of a colonial Canadian community. We will video their interviews and record in front of a green screen, which allows them to choose a realistic background.

In addition to the AIM student portal, students can also build French vocabulary related to our play with a fun and engaging computer game called Quizlet. Here is the link.

We will be beginning our next unit of inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, in the coming weeks. The central idea is: Culture is an expression of the beliefs and values that we share with others. We are asking the children to bring in one cultural artifact that represents their culture. We will discuss why this object is special and how it represents their culture. Please do not send anything that is too precious or priceless in terms of sentimental value.
