Grade 3 - December 14 / 2018

This week in Math, we investigated the features of 3D shapes. We constructed a variety of prisms and pyramids with Polydron and toothpicks! We also started a 3D printer project on Tinkercad to print their own shape.

Unit of Inquiry

We continue inquire into the properties that make a structure strong and stable. This week the students built a structure from paper. The structure had to withstand the force of wind generated by a fan. There were many interesting designs! After their first try, they created a second structure to incorporate successful design elements. The students are now ready to begin their final project. We can’t wait to see what they come up with.

In Literacy, we have been reflecting on the most effective way to monitor their comprehension when reading. Next week, the students will complete a reflection on Seesaw to see which strategy works best for them. Look out for that. The students have also been using RazKids to read non-fiction information about different structures around the world.

This week in Art, the Grade 3s glazed their clay containers that showcase a variety of texture. They also practised their collage skills by cutting shapes from magazines to create an object, animal, or place.

Excitement is mounting for our our Harmony Concert on December 21st. We would like students to wear their long-sleeved green sweater with the white shirt for the concert. If you don’t have a sweater, the green cardigan or the long-sleeved green polo shirt will also work. Here is a link to audio files and PDFs of pieces for practise at home. Students will need to memorize their songs and pieces. Short frequent practise sessions at home work best.

Are you ready for a week of Spirit?! For our last week of the term, we are going to show our house team spirit with some special fun spirit days. See the chart below for what each day will be representing!

After School Study Buddies with Ms Tarshis and Ms Sue in Learning Strategies on Tuesday, December 18 and Wednesday, December 19 will be cancelled. We wish you all a restful holiday season and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year!
