G3 Homeroom News
Preparing for our student-centred conferences this week has given the children some time to reflect on what they have done well and what they would like to improve. Thank you to all of the parents who attended conferences this week and we look forward to meeting with the rest of you next Tuesday!
Just a reminder that students can login to the AIM Portal at home. They are encouraged to practice their plays “Comment y aller” and listen to french music.
How to login:
User name: first initial, complete last name and the last two digits of the graduation year.
Ex. John Smith = jsmith28
In French class, we have just finished a unit on asking and answering questions in the past about our winter vacations and now we have been working on filming a puppet show (Un spectacle de marionnettes) using the characters from our play “Comment y aller.” These puppet shows and interactions can be found and viewed on Seesaw.
A definite highlight of this week was the epic snowfall on Monday night and Tuesday morning. We were relieved that everyone made it home safely on Monday evening. By Tuesday morning, the children were excited to play in the fresh powder! It was a reminder to pause and try to enjoy Mother Nature’s wrath even in such extreme conditions!
In Math, we continued exploring the concept of multiplication. During this unit, your child will develop strategies for multiplying and dividing whole numbers. They will use multiplication charts, manipulatives, grid paper, and calculators. By the end of the unit, they will:
Relate multiplication sentences to repeated addition
Use arrays to multiply and divide
Discover patterns for multiplying and dividing by 2s, 5s, 10s
Create multiplication and division fact families
Relate division sentences to repeated subtraction
The students’ cultural Cinderella tales have really taken off! It’s been amazing to see their creativity shine through in their story writing!
This week in Art, the Grade 3s began creating a book cover and inside illustrations for their Cinderella tales. Students identified the important parts of a book cover and made sure that their main character was the focal point. They also created an illustration of the magical moment, lost item, or ending of their story.
In Music, we have been exploring Instruments of the Orchestra using the interactive online tool developed by Carnegie Hall - Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Two students were inspired to bring in their own stringed instruments to show to their class, entirely unprompted. What a great example of student action! Thank you David and Sandy!
In PHE this week, Grade 3 started a Net/Wall unit. They will be participating in games and activities in which players send an object towards a court or target area that an opponent is defending. This week we played spikeball and used balloons and beach balls to play keep it. Next week volleyballs!
Next Caribou Contest: Wednesday, February 13, 2019 @ 8:30 AM in the Junior School cafeteria.
The next interactive question will be Sudoku which your students can practice now at www.cariboutests.com on the games page. Grade 3/4 will need to solve a 6x6 Sudoku problem, with a number of digits already inserted. There is not a history questions in the coming contest.
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 13th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class.
In French, on Wednesday, Feb. 6th 2019, Grade 1, 2 and 3 students will see Gregg LeRock in concert. He is an educator and a musician who performs for children in French. Please follow the link below to see the Venturing Out form for this field trip.

We are pleased to report that Learning Strategies teachers Robyn Tarshis and Susan Gray will be offering a new club this term called Morphology Magic.
Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. We will analyze the structure of words and parts of words, such as bases, prefixes, and suffixes. Morphology gives us an opportunity to play with words in a multisensory, playful approach. We will have fun creating word sums and matrixes such as these!
This program will be open to students in Grades 2 - 4, but spaces are limited! If you wish to have your child join us, please email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. Please join us for either Tuesday or Wednesday in the Learning Strategies room from 3:45 to 4:45 pm. The start dates are Tuesday, February 12 or Wednesday, February 13. We look forward to seeing your kids there!
