Grade 3 - February 8/ 2019

G3 Homeroom News

This week in math, we continued our investigation into multiplication by looking at arrays and the multiplication table. We will dive into division next week.

In writing, the grade threes have continued to work on their Cinderella stories. We are working on adding more detail and description, as well as, carefully proofreading.

We introduced a new unit of inquiry this week. This new unit is under the theme of How We Organize Ourselves. The central idea is: Our physical environment influences how we live. We introduced it with a provocation that had the students using Google Earth to investigate different places around the world that are very physically different.

Highlights

Art

This week in Art, the Grade 3s continued working on the front cover and inside drawings for their Cinderella story. They finished their outlines and added colour to ensure their focal point stands out.

Music

In music, we have been discussing the importance of practicing recorder productively by beginning with tricky sections. After this, practicing each line of music four or five times is a great strategy. By day 3 of practicing this way, students should be ready to play through the entire piece of music fluently (without errors). If there are any stumbles along the way, take that section out and practice before attempting to play the whole piece again. Here is our current piece, Kagome. There are no letter names added, so students will need to read the music as we practiced in class.

LOOKING AHEAD

We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 13th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class.

GLOBAL PATHWAYS SCHOOL

Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School. Currently a past Grade 9 ICE teacher, Jim Brickell, is the Principal of Global Pathways School.

The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by The York School community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.

Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to The York School, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
