Grade 3 - May 16/ 2019

Grade 3 Homeroom News

We want to wish you all a safe and happy long weekend! We only have a few more weeks together and we are looking forward to making the most of our time together.

Playdates

With the onset of the spring weather, students have been enjoying play dates with their classmates. A kind reminder to ensure that any playdate and/or pick-up arrangements need to be made prior to the day. During the school day, teachers may not regularly check their email as they are teaching and away from their computer. Emails of last-minute pick-up instructions and/or playdate arrangements may not be received until after dismissal. We appreciate your support to ensure a smooth dismissal.

HIGHLIGHTS

Math

This week in math, we explored another concept in measurement - length. This will lead us into exploring perimeter and area next week. A measurement is an important tool. The measurement skills that children learn and develop in school will be invaluable in their life experiences. Measurement allows children to apply the knowledge that they have learned in other areas of math. At home, have your child estimate how far they travel when they rides their bicycle around the block. You can use your FitBit/Garmin watch to estimate and measure steps.

Unit

In our Unit of Inquiry, we have focused on how plants adapt to survive. As we dive deeper, we will be using a combination of books, BrainPop videos and RazKids to learn more. We have also used our guided reading materials to practice the skill of visualizing while reading. This skill can also be applied to writing by adding detail and description to our writing.

PHE

This week in PHE, the Grade 3 students learned how to throw a shot put with the correct technique. They use a bean bag at first and then tried with a 4lb indoor shot put.

Music

In Music, the Grade 3s continue to work on their composed accompaniment in Groovy Music for a new rap composition project. We are also layering our individual raps to create a class composition. On June 7th at 8:30 AM, G3 students will perform a piece from Mary Poppins to open our scheduled Junior School assembly.

Art

The Grade 3 students have been working on a number of optical illusion design techniques over the past few weeks in art class.

Attendance Reminder

A gentle reminder that Before Care does NOT start until 7:30 AM.  There is no supervision before that time.

LOOKING AHEAD

Showcase

Next week, May 21st - 24th, is audition week! The audition schedule will be posted outside of the cafeteria and given to every homeroom teacher. If students are playing an instrument, please have them bring it to their audition. A piano will be available in the audition room. All students who audition will be able to perform in Showcase on June 11th. Parents are welcome to attend. More details to follow. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Andrea Hughes at ahughes@yorkschool.com
