Unit of Inquiry
In Inquiry, we have introduced our first Unit of Inquiry. This unit is under the theme of Where We Are In Place and Time. The central idea for this unit is: Communities change in response to the challenges they face.
We will be delving into the following lines of inquiry:
Characteristics of early Canadian communities (Form)
How early communities worked together to respond to challenges (Connection)
Different points of view of people in early communities (Perspective)
Over the last two weeks, we have planned several activities from the youcubed website. We have engaged your children in a variety of different activities to inspire them to see the beauty and creativity in mathematics. We have also focussed on developing a growth mindset and the power of YET. The programme is called: The Week of Inspirational Math. We encourage to check out the website to see what we have been up to.
We also started into some review of place value, which will be our first unit of mathematics.
In PHE, students have been participating in team-building and cooperative games. Students have been challenged to work together to complete a common goal. It has been great seeing them communicate, listen, respect, and have fun over this past week.
Grade 3 students created a class rhythm. Every student contributed a two-beat rhythm using manipulatives on the whiteboard.
The grade 3s have had an amazing week speaking French and getting to know the classroom routine. Students are only allowed to speak in French once they step into the French room and must use the resources around them to express what they want to say. Every class we say the date and review useful vocabulary through interactive activities were the students take the lead. We are learning the weather, colours, time, numbers and lots more. The Grade 3s have succeeded in only speaking French and being risk-takers in their learning! I can’t wait to LEAR, SPEAK and HAVE FUN in French with everyone this year!
Au Revoir! À Bientôt! Salut!

Looking forward to another year of creativity and imagination. The art room is in need of unwanted magazines for upcoming collage work. Please drop donations off in the art room
anytime. As well, I am looking for some large button-down shirts that we can repurpose as smocks for messy work. Thank you in advance for your support!
We have our first two field trips taking place in the coming weeks. On Monday, September 16th, we will be visiting Black Creek Pioneer Village to experience life as an Early European Settler. On Wednesday, September 25th, we will head to Crawford Lake to visit an Iroquoian Village.
Here are the schedules for Grade 3s:

Our Homework Policy values balance, play, literacy and family time. As such, beyond your child’s weekly reading goal, reminders and regular check-ins with their homeroom teacher, there will be limited homework assigned. If an additional piece of homework is assigned, your child will have 7 days to complete it - from the Monday it is assigned to the following Monday when it is due back.
Should you like some additional practice, here are some great options:
IXL **- online math and language-based skills practice
RazKids **- online and app-based leveled reading programme
Problem of the Week by The University of Waterloo (multi-step problem solving and solutions provided)
BrainPop **- educational videos and quizzes on a variety of subjects
**The York School pays for subscriptions to these online resources and will provide your child with the necessary information to login at home. Stay tuned as we introduce these resources at school and pass on the necessary login information for at home.
