HIGHLIGHTS

Math - Number Sense and Numeration

We practiced the standard algorithm for addition this week and began to explore mental math strategies for subtraction. We hoped to introduce measurement as a link to our unit of inquiry; however, we noticed a more natural link to grid systems and mapping, which we have been exploring this week.

Next week, we will continue with our work in subtraction. For extra support, continue to have conversations with your child about how he/she uses mental math strategies. Additionally, students may work through the Subtraction section on IXL.

Literacy

Next week, we will go back to practicing our spelling patterns in our small groups. Please look for the spelling list on Monday and help your child to identify the spelling pattern for his/her word list. The students will be expected to apply their knowledge of the spelling pattern by sorting new words as part of the spelling quiz on Thursday, November 8th.

Please encourage your child to bring a book to read daily during DEAR.

Unit of Inquiry

Students will continue to explore the natural resources found throughout Canada and the industries connected to each resource. They will begin to look at how industries have impacted the natural environment.

There are many websites on the Junior School Resource page connected to this unit. They can be found under the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘Who We Are’.

Art

This week in Art, the Grade 4s worked with clay! Students looked at the history of cameras and created their own camera design using clay.

Music

We have reviewed our recorder notes from Grade 3 and played a couple of our familiar pieces. Moving forward, we will be incorporating recorder into an ensemble instrumental piece including Orff xylophones and un-pitched percussions. There are still some students who still have not located their recorder. Please let me know if a new instrument needs to be issued to your child by November 8th.
