Morning practices - if your child plays on the basketball or volleyball team, they are expected to go outside immediately following practice. In some cases they may want to keep their gym clothes on because they have Phys. Ed first period. In this case, we ask that your child brings a pair of sweatpants with them so they are comfortable with outdoor temperatures. The students go outside after practice between 8:00am-8:15am
Uniform - please make sure your child has a pair of black dress shoes to wear indoors, they should also be wearing green or grey socks as per our uniform policy
We have been working on building fluency with our multiplication facts (0-9). Additional ways to support your child is to practice multiplication during car rides or you can use the Grade 3 section on IXL for fluency practice.
A few reminders:
The next spelling and sorting quiz is Friday November 30th
All students are reading a book for our current Literacy Circles. Assigned chapters and roles are due every Friday for the next three weeks. Please refer to your child’s Lit. Circle Duo-tang for assigned chapters and roles. We ask that students do not read ahead of the chapters as it will change the direction of conversation during the Lit Circle meeting.
Unit of Inquiry
Here is an overview of our next unit. The best way for you to support your child is to have conversations with him/her about what we’re learning about at school. If you make observations or learn something that connects to our unit, please talk to your child about it! Help them to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
Central idea: Exploring light and sound can help us understand scientific principles and the world around us.
Lines of Inquiry:
The scientific principles of light and sound
How light and sound are used in daily life
Technological innovations involving light and sound have an impact on the environment
This week in Art, the Grade 4s learned about cyanotype photography. Students used sun printing paper and laid objects on top to create a design. When exposed to the sun for 5 minutes and rinsed in water, their designs stand out on their blue photography paper.
In Music, our rehearsal process for the upcoming Harmony concert is well underway. Recorders are required in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Here is the link to the sheet music of Ode to Joy!
Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
SAVE THE DATE - December 14
*New* Junior School Celebration Assembly
On Friday, December 14th at 8:40 AM, students in Grades 1-5 will join together in the Junior School gym for our first Celebration Assembly.
The assembly is a time for the community to celebrate the many achievements this term - from math to music to sports - of students. The event will include recognizing student athletes from our fall teams: the U11 Girls’ basketball team, U9-U11 Cross country team, and the U-9 to U11 Soccer. There will be a choir performance celebrating our ‘vocal chops’ and the Junior School students who are participating in the Caribou Math Contest will be recognized as well.
Families are welcome to attend!
Instead of having one Junior School Athletic Assembly in June, this new Celebration Assembly format recognizes all student achievements including our student athletes each term.
As you can see by the fun tweet below, this event is always a huge hit at the Middle and Senior School!
