Mr. Goodfellow and Ms. Hudson are very excited to start this new school year with your wonderful children. We have a fun-filled, action packed year ahead of us!
We have been working hard at developing a strong classroom community. The students have worked to create a classroom Essential Agreement and reviewed The York School Essential Agreement of IB Learners. These documents help create a safe, caring and friendly school and classroom community.kk
A few suggestions for parents of both 4A and 4B
We would like your child to have a reusable water bottle in the classroom as it reduces the trips out of the room and helps to maximize our learning by keeping the mind and body hydrated. Every Friday the water bottle should be brought home by your child for cleaning and then returned again on Monday as we want to keep the bottles free of bacteria.
The children are very active during the day and may require some extra snacks in their bag. If your child is involved in an After 4 Programme, we also suggest that you pack an extra snack for them to enjoy after school.
We are also asking for each student to bring in their own headphones. We will be using many programmes on our Chromebooks this year that require audio.
Next week, we are asking the students to bring in their “ bag o’ surprises” to share with the class. This has been modelled for the students and an information page has been sent home.
Online registration for the Fall 2017 Co-Curricular Programme has commenced and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10th. Please refer to the Fall 2017 Co-Curricular Programme Guide (which is also online).
Programmes commence the week of September 18th.
Junior School Food Policy
This year there have been some significant changes to the Junior School Food Policy, especially around the issue of birthday treats. We encourage you to read the policy and pose any questions on Curriculum Night.
At The York School, we constantly reflect on and review our practices, ensuring that the values of The York School are present in each classroom and assigned homework.
As a faculty, we reviewed current research and understanding of development and learning, and reflected on our homework policy. We are happy to share the new Junior School Homework Policy. The policy is an articulation of current and best practices. It is considerate of young learners’ development and the importance of balancing school and family.
In alignment with the new policy, students in Grades 4 and 5 will continue to use IXL as one possible resource, while students in JK to Grade 3 will not.
If you have any questions, please contact the Junior School Director of Curriculum, Karen McCallum-Ryan, email@example.com.
Terry Fox Run
On Friday, September 15th, the Junior students, staff, parents and guests will join together for the 24th annual Terry Fox Run/Walk. All students are to come to school wearing their gym uniform and running shoes or an official Terry Fox t-shirt from 2017 or before.
At 1:15 p.m., all Kindergarten to grade 5 students will gather in their houses and participate in warm-up, Terry Fox team building activities and a walk/run along the Kay Gardner Beltline. If you would like to order a 2017 Terry Fox t-shirt (a great souvenir of a memorable day and 75% of the price of the of the t-shirt cost benefits cancer research!), please have your child return this T-Shirt Order Form to Ms. Hickman as soon as possible as quantities and sizes are limited.
