Grade 4 - September 15 / 2017

Weekly Highlights:
The Grade 4 classes have begun their first unit of inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme How We Express Ourselves.

Central Idea: Media is a powerful tool that influences the decisions people make.
 An inquiry into…

  • The responsibilities of good digital citizen (Responsibility)
  • The choices we make as part of an online community (Reflection)
  • The effects of our online actions on ourselves and others (Causation)

During this unit, students will explore what it means to be a digital citizen. They will consider how they can be principled while using digital tools and discerning while browsing the internet.

We began a math unit on number sense, including place value, which will continue for a few weeks. Our first text form for writing is the recount.

The students are becoming more settled with the routines of school. Students were very enthusiastic while sharing their bag O’ surprises with their peers. It was a great way to share our interests and hobbies with our classmates! Thank you for supporting them with this at home.

The Grade 4 students are off to a great start in art class! Students are working with various images to create a personal collage. If you have unwanted magazines at home that you would like to donate to our art room, please send them to school with your child. I am collecting large size button up dress shirts to be used as painting smocks in our art studio. This is a great way to repurpose unwanted clothing. As always, thank you so much for your support.

A few suggestions for parents of both 4A and 4B:
We would like your child to have a reusable water bottle in the classroom as it reduces the trips out of the room and helps to maximize our learning by keeping the mind and body hydrated. Every Friday the water bottle should be brought home by your child for cleaning and then returned again on Monday as we want to keep the bottles free of bacteria.

The children are very active during the day and may require some extra snacks in their bag. If your child is involved in an After 4 Programme, we also suggest that you pack an extra snack for them to enjoy after school.

We are also asking for each student to bring in their own headphones. We will be using many programmes on our Chromebooks this year that require audio.

The Grade 4s are off to an excellent start in French! We have been having great fun learning some of the vocabulary for our first play which we will dive into next week.

Please respect the rules of the road at drop off and pick up and follow proper York School procedures to ensure everyone’s safety.
