Grade 4 - October 13 / 2017

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS:

What a busy short week in Grade 4! Students have been working hard amidst sporting events (soccer and cross country) and their new commitments to their leadership roles around the school. The change in uniform is always an adjustment… Shirts just don’t seem to stay tucked in!

Thank you to all of our parents who were able to attend our Grade 4 family tech morning. It was an excellent learning opportunity for our students and we are sure many conversations continued over the dinner table that evening. Students are nearly finished their exploration of what it means to be a digital citizen and how to be discerning and thoughtful online. They explored the concept of a digital footprint and considered how their actions online could last forever. They discussed what to avoid posting, even if it seems harmless at the time, when using the internet, text messaging, or social media. Next week, we complete our summative task for this unit and move on to the next transdisciplinary theme!

We are continuing with recount writing. Students have been having great discussions in their literature circle meetings. They have been making authentic connections to the figures they have been reading about and learning how to have effective book talks. Students are also coming to the end of our first cycle of Words Their Way.

Students have been consolidating their understanding of addition by reviewing mental strategies as well as the standard algorithm. Next week, we’ll explore subtraction, including mental strategies and algorithms. Both classes have participated in fun games to help build their mental math fluency. Practising  math facts, such as addition facts, in a fun environment is great for developing mathematicians. They’re also lots of fun! Tools such as a deck of cards or some dice can create some great activities. Here’s some ideas from South African and American organizations.

In addition to the AIM portal, students are also building play-relevant vocabulary through an online program called Quizlet. Here is the link to try out at home!

REMINDERS:
The winter uniform requires students to wear black dress shoes in school. They should also have outdoor shoes available for recess and pick up and drop off. Sweaters should be worn with pants and kilts.

Students are reminded to return their homework folders and agendas to the classroom every morning.

Thank you to parents who participated in the Scholastic order. We will send out a new order form again soon. All students should have received their order unless their title was on backorder.

Please help your son or daughter remember to bring their library books in every Friday so they can turn them in and take out some new ones!

If your child is going to be absent, please send an email to the homeroom teacher and attendance (1639attendance@yorkschool.com).

As well, if your child will be attending aftercare, please send an email to be sent to the homeroom teacher and Carol Klestinec (cklestinec@yorkschool.com).

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
