Grade 4 - October 20 / 2017

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS:

The students looked sharp for the photos this week! Foursquare is back, which has been very exciting. Students worked hard wrapping up summative tasks for their unit on digital media!

We wrapped up the last comprehension skill for our novel study: visualizing. Students worked on creating a picture based on their Who Is book that drew inspiration from words from the text that gave visual clues. Each student is finishing authoring their own fictional recount as a summative task for our digital citizenship unit. They completed a planner and are using a writing frame in Google Drive to help organize their writing into paragraphs, including an introduction and conclusion. We wrapped up our first spelling unit. The first spelling unit always takes a little longer with the Words Their Way approach as there are new routines that are modelled for the students. Next week, we begin our second spelling unit, which will be followed by a quiz. Information and their week’s words will be in the agenda, and students can practice the words at home.

Students have been exploring subtraction strategies and will continue working with this unit next week. Thank you to the students who are ensuring they are completing their IXL homework. Students are reminded it is a requirement and not optional that they work in IXL for 30 minutes on the assigned sections each week.

We will be kicking off our new unit next week which is all about the political and physical regions of Canada! This unit falls under the transdisciplinary theme, ‘Who We Are’.  As always, our unit will be shaped by our central idea and lines of inquiry. “People share a similar set of characteristics influenced by the land they live.”

  • Political and physical regions of Canada (form)
  • The relationship between the natural environment and industrial development (perspective)
  • Balancing human needs and wants with environmental stewardship (responsibility)

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Winter Athletic season is almost upon us!  Please click here to sign up for Winter teams and GADPs!

In Visual Arts, The Grade 4 students will be working on an art piece that aims to solidify their knowledge and understanding of the elements and principles of art and design. We are using found objects, or “junk” items to create abstract art demonstrating visual balance, emphasis, pattern, line, unity, shape and space. The students will be coming home looking for junk items they can bring to school for this art piece. Anything in your junk drawers will most likely be great for this work (other than glass objects or batteries). Items from a hardware store such as bolts, washers, screws, cogs, etc. are also great items. The kids are really looking forward to creating with their found objects!

REMINDERS:

The winter uniform requires students to wear black dress shoes in school. They should also have outdoor shoes available for recess and pick up and drop off. Sweaters should be worn with pants and kilts.

Students are reminded to return their homework folders and agendas to the classroom every morning.

Please help your son or daughter remember to bring their library books in every Friday so they can turn them in and take out some new ones!

Please make sure to check The York School’s full school calendar regularly for updates, locations and times.
