On Thursday, February 14th we will be traveling to Horseshoe Valley for our annual ‘Great Canadian Outdoors Day’. We would love for parents to join us on this trip; however, we can not guarantee that there will be room on the bus. In the past, many parents have carpooled together. Please let your homeroom teacher know if you can join us.
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 13th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class. Here are the class lists for your reference: 4A and 4B.
We will be continuing our poetry unit with a focus on structured poems. Just a reminder that IXL English is available at all times if you would like them to be doing a little extra in the evenings.
We will spend another week reviewing units of measurement, perimeter and area.
Unit of Inquiry
We are kicking off our new unit of inquiry all about Early Societies. We will begin by exploring Canada’s First Nations. We will be looking at social characteristics such as daily life, homes, food, clothing, families/responsibilities, social structure, religion and innovations.
In PHE, the Grade 4’s will be exploring target games. We will be working on our throwing mechanics and applying them to games such as bocce, bowling, and spike ball. Students are discussing strategies to be successful in this type of games such as communication, teamwork, taking our time, and accuracy.
Just a reminder that students can login to the AIM Portal at home. They are encouraged to practice their plays “Louis La Grenouille” and listen to french music.
How to login:
User name: first initial, complete last name and the last two digits of the graduation year.
Ex. John Smith = jsmith27
In Class we just finished a unit on writing in the past about our winter vacations and now we have been working on filming a puppet show (Un spectacle de marionnettes) using the characters from our play “Louis La Grenouille.” These puppet shows can be found and viewed on Seesaw.
This week in Art, the Grade 4s continued learning about pointillism. For this art piece, they used four colours of Sharpie marker to create a dotted design on a canvas bag.
In Music, students are sharpening their rhythm skills in preparation for the annual CIS winter classic on our musc literacy tool - Breezin Thru Theory. The competition will begin in a few weeks. Students have access to this from home also if they would like to continue to improve their response time once 100% accuracy is achieved in Rhythm Rocks! Username: yorkschool, Password: wood246
Next Caribou Contest: Wednesday, February 13, 2019 @ 8:30 AM in the Junior School cafeteria.
The next interactive question will be Sudoku which your students can practice now at www.cariboutests.com on the games page. Grade 3/4 will need to solve a 6x6 Sudoku problem, with a number of digits already inserted. There is not a history questions in the coming contest.
WELLNESS WEEK - FEBRUARY 11-14, 2019
Our school-wide Wellness Week is coming up! Please see the poster and info box below for each days’ details.
Dear York Families,
We are pleased to report that Learning Strategies teachers Robyn Tarshis and Susan Gray will be offering a new club this term called Morphology Magic.
Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. We will analyze the structure of words and parts of words, such as bases, prefixes, and suffixes. Morphology gives us an opportunity to play with words in a multisensory, playful approach. We will have fun creating word sums and matrixes such as these!
This program will be open to students in Grades 2 - 4, but spaces are limited! If you wish to have your child join us, please email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. Please join us for either Tuesday or Wednesday in the Learning Strategies room from 3:45 to 4:45 pm. The start dates are Tuesday, February 12 or Wednesday, February 13. We look forward to seeing your kids there!
