Grade 4 - February 8 / 2019

  • We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 13th. Students do not have to exchange cards but if they do, we ask that they include everyone in their class. Here are the class lists for your reference: 4A and 4B

  • Students are encouraged to wear York athletic clothing on Monday so they can participate in the ‘Mindful Morning’ activities.

We will continue to learn about measurement, with a focus on time (telling time, estimating time and elapsed time). Here is an IXL section to support your child’s learning: Section O - Time.

We will be reviewing sentence and paragraph structure as well as quotations in preparation for our next writing form, narratives.

Next week, the students will inquire into the family life and structure of ancient civilizations.

This week in Art, the Grade 4s created their own ‘I Spy’ drawing inspired by the famous books. They used thin black markers to draw numerous items that were part of their main theme. They added colour and then wrote the items that the viewer should search for in their work.

In Music, students are sharpening their rhythm skills in preparation for the annual CIS winter classic on our music literacy tool - Breezin Thru Theory. The competition will begin in a few weeks. Students have access to this from home also if they would like to continue to improve their response time once 100% accuracy is achieved in Rhythm Rocks! Username: yorkschool, Password: wood246

In PHE, students have been exploring target games which include beanbag bocce, bowling, prairie dog pick off, castle ball, and many more. We discussed the new Canadian Food Guide and made comparisons with the older version. Overall, the students preferred the new guide because it had real food pictures and it was better to understand how their plate should look.

On February 14th, students in Grades 3-5 will be going cross country skiing at Horseshoe Valley to celebrate our Canadian Outdoor Day. The bus will be departing at 8 am and will be returning at 4 pm. On the day of the trip, please make sure that your child has appropriate winter clothing; It is often quite cold and we strongly recommend that the children bring extra warm clothing. Layering is encouraged.

Our school-wide Wellness Week is coming up! Please see the poster and info box below for each days’ details.

Each year a group of grade 11's travel to India during March Break to volunteer at Global Pathways School. We have a special connection with the school as the founders of the school are the previous Head of York School and Head of the Junior School and currently, a past Grade 9 ICE teacher Jim Brickell is the Principal of the school.

The students travelling to GPS enjoy two weeks of volunteering in the classrooms, taking field trips with the classes, enjoying recess on the play structures that have been donated by the York Community and spend time with students in the classes and their homes.

Before departing on this adventure we collect donations to take with us in duffle bags to hand out to the community. This years' wish list is here. If you have any of the following items stored away in your closets and are looking to find a new home for these items, please bring them to York, there are bins in the Gathering Place to deposit the items. We will be collecting these items until Monday, February 25th. Many thanks in advance for your donations.
