REMINDERS

A gentle reminder that students need to bring their black dress shoes back to school as well as indoor gym shoes. The weather is forever changing and students need to have indoor and outdoor shoes at all times, and be prepared to be outside in rainy weather.

Grade 4 and 5 Camp: Parent Information Meeting

Tuesday, April 16, 2019 @ 8:00 AM in the Junior School Library. Students in Grade 5 will be heading to camp on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, returning Thursday, May 30, 2019 while Grade will leave for camp on Thursday and return on Friday, May 31. Andrea Lossing, the Trip and Camp Curriculum Coordinator, is hosting an information meeting for parents on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 8:00 AM, in the library. Andrea will be there to answer any questions you may have about camp as well as present about camp essentials, what to bring, what not to bring, etc. If you have any questions, Andrea can be reached at extension 1221 or alossing@yorkschool.com.

French

Soon in French we will be starting a new play which will be announced next week. In preparation for a new and more advanced play, students have been learning about new concepts in the French language including contractions and words that go together.

Encouraging the language at home

Here is an example of how we are learning about contractions in class which you can review with your kids at home. We have also learnt a new entry rap in class which students can practice at home.

Math

In Math, we will continue to explore the relationship between fractions and decimals. The students will be comparing and ordering, adding and subtracting decimals, working with fractions and mixed numbers, and finding lowest common denominators.

Literacy

In Literacy, we are brushing up our skills to prepare for our next writing form - persuasive writing! We are practicing using paragraph form, writing an engaging opening sentence, providing evidence and examples to prove our point and writing a summary/closing statement.

Unit

In Unit of Inquiry, we will begin “How we organize ourselves”. Here is an overview of the unit:

Central idea:

Human interactions impact the natural resources and all living things in a habitat.

Key Concepts:

  • Form

  • Causation

  • Responsibility

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Plants and animals are interdependent and are adapted to meet their needs from the resources available in their particular habitats

  • Society relies on plants and animals

  • Balancing human needs and wants with environmental stewardship

Music

In Music, we began to read and sight-sing through a musical which visits different decades in music. Good luck to the students participating in the CISMF Junior Choir performance at Roy Thomson Hall on Sunday, An email with logistics was sent directly to parents involved. Please contact me directly if you need further information. It’s going to be an amazing experience for our students!

PHE

In PHE, we had some great discussions about internet safety and how to continue to make good choices when using technology. We also began playing Badminton. Students are getting familiar with the equipment and are making comparisons to other racquet sports that they have played. We will continue Badminton next week, where we will expand our skills and play some games.

LOOKING AHEAD

International Day of Pink

On Wednesday, April 10th, The York School will recognize Day of Pink. Students can add pink accessories to their uniform (tshirt, socks, headband, tie, necklace, etc.) Please do your best to find pink accessories, but if necessary, red will be accepted. Students and teachers will participate in classroom activities promoting diversity, inclusion and caring friendships.
