Grade 4 - Oct. 3 / 2019

Unit of Inquiry

We continue to dive into our unit on Canada. Students were given a map of Canada on Tuesday and asked to label the Provinces & Territories on the map and research the capital cities. Students will be quizzed on the location of Provinces & Territories next week. Please review the map of Canada with your child.

We are currently wrapping up our investigation into place value and will begin exploring various ways to add and subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers. The students will explore these concepts with Base 10 materials. We will be learning strategies for addition using friendly numbers and mental math methods. We will also put some emphasis on how to estimate sums and differences.

For students who are a part of the Caribou Contest Math Club, the first Caribou Contest will take place on Wednesday, October 16 @ 10:00 AM in the cafeteria. The Interactive Question will be Sliding Blocks which your students can practice now on the games page. Because the Sliding Blocks game page can be used to solve such puzzles, this site will be blocked from Tuesday, October 15 to Thursday, October 17. Please do not wait until the contest day to practice, as you will not be able to! There will be no history question.

We now have a well-developed spelling routine. It is on a two-week schedule. At the beginning of the schedule, the students receive 2 lists. One list is cut up and stays at school for sorting and various spelling activities. The second list goes home - with their chosen spelling words highlighted. These are the words that they will be tested on. We encourage our students to use their home list in the same way. They can cut up the words and sort them into their categories. They can also practise their 10 words for the quiz. The students have modelled this process on a Seesaw activity. If you have any questions, please let us know.

We will begin exploring letter writing both friendly and informative.

Another great week of Invasion Games we have had! Students have been building their skills, both tactical and sport-specific, using soccer balls. We will continue to build on this unit next week with more soccer-like games that challenge the students way of thinking.

We are fortunate to have access to two music resources online. The first is Breezin’ Thru Theory”. Here is the link to the login page. Username and password is the same for everyone. Username: yorkschool  Password: wood246  From here, students will be prompted to enter their name and select the correct homeroom. We are working on Chapter 2 - Rhythm. The first part of the chapter contains interactive lessons and the second half consists of interactive rhythm drills. Students are encouraged to practise at home in order to increase their fluency in reading notation. We use this skill in compositions as well as instrumental and vocal performance. If students complete a drill, they need to remember to click submit, which will then show up on my teacher dashboard.

This week in French, Grade 4 students have started their presentations of the “C’est Moi” project. The Grade 4s have really enjoyed sharing aspects of their interests, family, likes and dislikes to their peers through their presentations. After their presentations, they will be filling out a self-evaluation to see what goals they have accomplished and what goals they can work towards with their oral French Skills. Next week after the presentations are finished, we will be working on their Canadian Unit by exploring different aspects of each province and territory in Canada.

The Grade Four artists continue to work on their self-portrait collage/mixed-media art pieces this week.

  • Students should have a pair of indoor and outdoor shoes

Please see our schedules linked below. Please note that subject blocks may change from time to time but we will use this as a guide.

Click here for instructions on how to set up your child's Yorkschool Google account at home.

Should you like some additional practice, here are some great options:

IXL **- online math and language-based skills practice

To sign in to your child’s IXL account - you need to access IXL through the York School website/portal. Once there, you need to click on JK-Grade 5 resources in the top green toolbar. After this, click on IXL. Their username is their first initial + last name + 28. Example: snewell28. Their password is: 123456.

BrainPop **- educational videos and quizzes on a variety of subjects

Students can log in to Brain Pop and Brain Pop Jr. from their Chrome Account. Once there, they need to go to Google Drive. In Drive there is an icon on the top toolbar that looks like a waffle or a 3x3 grid. Click on the icon - a variety of apps appear. If you click on “More” an icon for Brain Pop appears. Once this icon is clicked, your child will be directed to their account. They can switch between Brain Pop and Brain Pop Jr. once they are in Brain Pop.

Raz Kids - **reading programme with comprehension questions

In previous years, Grade 4 did not have access to Raz Kids. Due to its popularity, we are working on getting a license for all of our students. Stay tuned.
