Grade 5 - January 12 /2017

HIGHLIGHTS

Welcome back and happy 2018! It’s been great to have the students back at school. They are slowly getting back into the normal routines, and have worked hard throughout the week.

In anticipation, of the upcoming Exhibition, the students will be travelling to Google on Monday, January 15th from 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM. We have included a lengthy update about the Exhibition, so please read carefully!

LOOKING FORWARD

Exhibition has officially begun! This week marked the start of our provocation. The students participated in the following sessions:

  • An overview of the PYP Exhibition

  • A variety of presentations exploring passions and topics on how to express ourselves

We started brainstorming some issues, but need more time to share ideas and narrow broad topics. At the end of next week, we will ask the students to select their top three issues. They will be asked to explain why they feel passionately about the issues and what questions they will ask to guide their inquiry. Dinner discussion (DD’s) should be happening most nights as your child will want to discuss potential issues with you. We ask that you help them to identify why the issues are important to them (and perhaps steer their thinking to specific ideas).

The issues need to be aligned with the theme, “How We Express Ourselves,” an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

In math students are working with decimals. This week the students created menus, traded menus and answered a few questions using adding, subtracting and multiplication with decimals. Even how to calculate a tip!

A new face in Grade 5!

My name is Sheryl Faith and I'm an educator and a life-long artist who has always enjoyed surrounding myself with creative opportunities. I began my career in 2005 teaching Grade 5 at The York School for 6 years, then moved into the role of Middle School Director of Student Life and eventually became a grade 6 English/Humanities specialist. Two years ago, I moved to Melbourne with my Aussie husband and two little girls and worked at a wonderful PYP school as a Grade 6 teacher. I recently returned to Canada, and I'm so excited to be back in The York School community teaching Art in the Junior School!
