Félicitations à Edward who participated in the Concours d’art oratoire (French public speaking competition) last week at Toronto Montessori School. He placed 2nd overall in the French Immersion category for his speech on Reasons Not to Smoke. Bravo, Edward!

In PHE, as part of our Net/Wall Unit, the Grade 5 are learning volleyball skills and concepts. Net/Wall Games are activities in which players send an object towards a court or target area that an opponent is defending. The aim is to cause the object to land in the target area while making it difficult for the opponent to return the object.

Sharing our Action with the younger grades

Exciting Exhibition Student Action

As part of the student action of our exhibition some of the students would like to communicate to the parent community and share their action.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Kaleigh and I am a Grade 5 student. As most of you know, in Grade 5 we do a big inquiry called Exhibition. If you have not heard of this, then here is a quick explanation. You get to pick an investigation  under the category of your Unit of Inquiry. Our theme is How We Express Ourselves. We independently have to research about our topics and later on, we write a five paragraph essay about our matter. Now we are working on our action piece.

My topic is studying cultural food on New Years. For part of my action, I am making a recipe book of different cultures foods. And for my action I would like you to help me out. So please, if you have any recipes at home or know anyone who has yummy and delicious recipes that express a culture or who you are, please put them in the brown box that says “recipes” on the fireplace mantle in the Gathering Place. Also, feel free to give more than one recipe. Please give the recipes in by Friday, March 9th.

Finally, I will put all the recipes together and make my recipe book! When it is completed, it will be on display in the Gathering Place so you can flip through and take pictures of the recipes that you like and that your family will enjoy too!

Thank you so much!

Dear Parents,

Hello, my name is Hayden. I am in grade 5, and, as many of you know, we are in the middle of completing the Exhibition. We had to pick a topic, research it, have a primary resource, and finally take action to make a difference. My topic is protest music. For my action, I have made a short video of protest songs and what issues they are about. I would appreciate if you could take the time in your day to watch my video. I hope that you can learn something new about the music that you might listen to on an everyday basis. Thank you!

Looking Ahead

To coincide with the CISMF music festival, the 5th annual CIS Winter Classic starts tomorrow!! Grade 4-12  students from all participating CIS schools will be drilling their rhythm concepts by playing Hockey Shoot ’n Score - playable on any device! It is live now and continues to Wednesday March 7 2018 (at midnight!)  So warm up your fingertips and get your slap shot ready!!

Again, for parents who are new to the CISMF this is a fun way to get all our kids (even students not performing in the concert) learning rhythm fundamentals; put a smile on their faces as they reinforce important concepts both at school and at home!

We have front-loaded in music class by reviewing rhythm concepts. The instructions plus access to the the special game can be found at this link:

The winning school will be announced at the CISMF concert on April 8th. Go York!

Junior School Showcase

A favourite event in the Junior School is the annual Junior School Showcase. It is back again this spring but with a little change. Instead of one showcase for students from Grades 1 to 5, there will be two showcases, one for Grades 1-3 on April 13th and one for Grades 4-5 on May 4th. The showcases will take place during assigned assemblies from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., in the gymnasium. Students from Grades 1 to 5 are invited to participate. Parents of students participating in showcase are invited to attend. Each student may present for a maximum of 90 seconds. Videos may also be submitted to be shown during the showcase. If you have any questions, please email Jessica Smart at We welcome all students to participate.

The Showcase

  • Builds our Junior School community
  • Celebrates interests and passions of students
  • Demonstrates the diversity of students
  • Develops independent self-management skills

The Showcase process is:

  • Students sign-up for the Showcase on the signup form outside of the cafeteria.
Sign-up starts on Monday, March 5th and ends on Friday, March 9th.
  • Student will attend at least two practices between Tuesday, April 3rd and Thursday, April 12th.

To participate, students and families need to commit to:

  • Prepared, practiced and rehearsed performances
  • One audition at school
  • One rehearsal at school
  • To be at school at 8:00 a.m. on the day of the showcase
  • To be responsible for props and any accessories needed
