Grade 5 - September 21 / 2018

We have begun our unit,  How We Organize Ourselves and have begun discussions on Government Systems. Hopefully, you had some fruitful “dinner discussions” this week on the different forms of government.

Over the weekend, explore our current events. Are there things happening in the world relating to governments? Ask your child how we find news articles at school? Hint: Newsela, DOGO news, the new CBC kids news website, etc.

Next week we will be looking into the different levels of government within our Canadian system.

Students are exploring the importance of place value and learning to estimate, mentally add 3 and 4 digit numbers in their heads with strategies we have learned in class. We will be practicing the standard algorithm for adding and subtracting 3 and 4 digit numbers next week.

Grade 5 students are practicing and perfecting the perfect paragraph. We have been looking at rubrics and learning to enhance our writing to fulfill the goals we set for ourselves with the rubrics.

This week in Art, the Grade 5s added colour to their contour portraits using watercolour paints.

Class Trips:

During the month of October we are going to be heading out of the classroom to learn about how our Canadian Government System organizes. We will first be going to the Market Gallery, at the St. Lawrence Market on October 3rd. The following week we will be visiting The Legislative Assembly, October 12th. Please keep an eye out for the VO forms in the next week or so.
